Sept. 26, 2015 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Sept. 26, 2015 -- The Penn State Nittany Lion women's tennis team competed in the second day of Hokie Invitational at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. Head coach Chris Cagle's squad continued to compete in the eight-flight format for singles and three doubles flight matchups in the multi-team event.
Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgewoth, England) picked up a victory in singles action, downing Rebecca Harris from James Madison (6-4, 6-4). Teammate Samantha Tutelman (New York, N.Y.) also grabbed a victory over Kelly Williford of Virginia Tech (7-5, 6-0) as did Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.), who defeated A.J. Gomer of Towson (6-0, 6-1).
Kelly Mengel (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China), Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.), Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.), Emily Rivers (Washington, D.C.) and Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) each competed as well, dropping their matches today.
In doubles action, Tutelman/Shukow advanced to the finals of the Maroon flight with a 6-3 win over Amos/Peterson of James Madison.
Coach Cagle commented on today's performance, "I thought our team stuck to their individual game plans very well today. That did not always translate in to wins but I know it will serve us well in the long run. We will be playing many quality opponents tomorrow and have the opportunity to win a few flights. I look forward to finishing strong tomorrow!"
