ROSEMONT, Ill. -- After helping top-ranked Penn State women's volleyball to a pair of wins against nationally ranked opponents, sophomore Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has earned Big Ten Co-Player of the Week honors. Washington shares this week's honor with Ohio State's Taylor Sandbothe.
The award marks the second career Big Ten Player of the Week nod for Washington, as well as her fourth career total Big Ten Weekly honor. She earned a pair of Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades in 2014.
Washington led the team with 3.33 kills per set on .515 hitting in a 2-0 week that featured straight set wins against No. 21 Colorado and No. 2 Stanford. Defensively, Washington finished second on the team with 1.17 blocks per set this week, including back-to-back multi-block performances.
Against the Buffaloes, Washington led the offense with a team-high eight kills without a single attack error, recording a .500 hitting efficiency. She also finished second on the team with four total blocks. The next night, Washington put down 12 kills, registering a team-high .526 hitting clip. She also finished atop the team standings with three total blocks.
In five matches this season, Washington has posted at least three blocks in every outing. On the year, her 1.47 blocks per set ranks third in the Big Ten standings. On the offensive side, her .486 hitting percentage is tops on the Nittany Lion squad.
Washington and the rest of the Penn State women's volleyball team (5-0) hit the road this week, traveling to South Bend, Ind. for the Golden Dome Invitational. The Nittany Lions will take on Eastern Kentucky Friday, Sept. 11 at 4:30 p.m. before meeting Mississippi State and tournament host Notre Dame Saturday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
