BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team continued play at the ITA Regional Championships on Sunday. One singles player will continue in the quarterfinals Monday. The Nittany Lions ended their doubles play with two teams losing in the Round of 8.
Senior Aws Laaribi (Rye, N.Y.) is the only Nittany Lion to advance to Monday in the ITA Regionals Championship. He will compete in the quarterfinals against UVA's Henrik Wiersholm. Laaribi advanced from his two big wins on Sunday. Defeating Harrison Richmond from UVA and Nick Bybel from Bucknell, Laaribi secured his spot in the quarterfinals.
Laaribi and Freshman Ben Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa.) ended their doubles play this weekend with a 8-3 loss to Virginia Tech's Contini/Tessaro. They end the weekend 4-1 overall.
Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) and partner Zach Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa.) finished their weekend 4-1 after falling to Old Dominion's Moundir/Kijametovic Sunday in a 8-1 match.
Christian Lutschaunig (Richboro, Pa.) finished his weekend 2-1 in the Round of 32 on Sunday. Matt Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) went 3-1 overall closing out his weekend with a loss to Virginia Tech's Joao Monteiro in the Round of 16. B.Lieb fell to Virginia Tech's Aaron Gomez on Sunday in the Round of 32 to bring him to a weekend record of 2-1. Marc Collado (Barcelona, Spain) closed his weekend 2-1 with a loss to UVA's Mac Styslinger in the Round of 32. Hanzlik was 3-1 this weekend with a tough match against Adam Moundir (Old Dominion) knocking him out of the Round of 16.
"Everyone played really strong today. They were up against the best of the best in our region and they all played hard," said Head Coach Jeff Zinn, "The way they played this weekend gives us confidence that they will continue to play hard through the spring. Aws Laaribi plays tomorrow and we hope that he can pull out another win and continue to be one of our strong singles players. Overall, I am really pleased with the weekend and the entire team.
