Nine Nittany Lions Receive Big Ten Accolades

Nine Penn State Nittany Lions received Big Ten individual awards, as announced by the conference office Friday afternoon. Seniors Raquel Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) and Mallory Weber (Novi, Mich.) were named to the All-Big Ten first team.

Rodriguez was also named an All-Big Ten first team honoree last season.

In 2015, Rodriguez has started all 18 matches, scored four goals and added three assists. Weber ranks second on the team with seven goals and leads the Big Ten with eight assists. She also is tied for second in the Big Ten with 22 points.

Sophomores Emily Ogle (Strongsville, Ohio) and Megan Schafer (Langhorne, Pa.) along with freshman Kaleigh Riehl (Fairfax Station, Va.) were named to the All-Big Ten second team.

Ogle has started all 18 matches this season, tallied two goals and recorded three assists.

Schafer has turned out a phenomenal sophomore campaign, as she is tied for second in the Big Ten in goals (10) and points (22).

Riehl has started all 18 matches on the Nittany Lion backline, logging 1,576 minutes out of 1,660 minutes in the 2015 campaign. Her assist in Wednesday's 3-1 victory over Michigan was the first point of her Nittany Lion career.

A quartet of Nittany Lions were named to the All-Big Ten Freshman team. Ellie Jean (Coventry, Conn.), Alina Ortega-Jurado (Wetzlar, Germany), Riehl and Charlotte Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) make up the Nittany Lion contingent on the All-Big Ten Freshman team. Penn State is the only school with three or more student-athletes on the 2015 All-Big Ten Freshman team.

Jean, another key member of the Nittany Lion backline, has recorded three assists on the year, including an assist on Weber's first goal of the season in the season-opener against Hofstra. Jean has started all 18 matches, playing 1,339 minutes.

Having played in 15 matches this season, Ortega-Jurado has tallied one goal and three assists in her rookie campaign.

Williams has played in 18 matches this season, which includes 10 starts. On the year, Williams has recorded four assists to go along with one goal. In her second career game as a Nittany Lion, Williams scored the game-winning goal in the 4-2 win over Loyola Marymount on Aug. 23. Also, in the 4-0 victory for Penn State over Wisconsin, Williams dished out two assists.

Additionally, Teddy Chase (Wayne, Pa.), an Academic All-Big Ten honoree, was honored as Penn State's Sportsmanship Award winner.

Penn State hosts Illinois in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament Sunday, Nov. 1, at Jeffrey Field live on the Big Ten Network at 3 p.m.
