Feb. 1, 2016

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Penn State fencing team wrapped up competition at the Northwestern Duels yesterday, seeing success with both the men's and women's teams.

Penn State faced eight teams throughout the Duels: Ohio State, Notre Dame, Stanford, California Institute of Technology, Air Force Academy, University of California San Diego, Cleveland State (men only) and Northwestern (women only).

Out of all the bouts, the Penn State men and women only dropped three contests, one apiece to Notre Dame and one to Big Ten rival Ohio State. The men lost 10-17 and the women fell 8-19 against the Fighting Irish. The women's team also came up short against the Buckeyes, losing 12-15.

The men dug deep and took home all-weapon wins against Cleveland State (22-5), Airforce (24-3) and CalTech (25-2). The men performed particularly well against the Beavers, going 9-0 on both sabre and foil. The men also won against Stanford (15-12), UCSD (17-10) and Ohio State (14-13).

The Nittany Lion women were also able to find success at Notre Dame, winning against Air Force (22-5), CalTech (25-2), Stanford (21-6), UCSD (20-7) and Northwestern (16-11). The epee and foil squads went undefeated against the Falcons and Beavers, respectively, clinching two of four all-weapon wins for the Nittany Lions. The women also took home all-weapon wins against the Cardinal and the Tritons.
