Metryka Takes First Place at Junior Olympics

CLEVELAND - The Penn State men's fencing team finished strong in the final two days of the Junior Olympics. Freshmen Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.) and Anton Piskovatskov (Houston, Texas), and sophomore Khalil Thompson (Teaneck, N.J.) all finished top-10 at the tournament.

Metryka was the top performer for the Nittany Lions on Monday, celebrating a first place finish in the junior men's sabre event. Thompson also competed in the junior men's sabre event, coming in eighth place.

Rounding out the junior men's sabre results, freshmen Marcel Dolegiewicz (Park Ridge, Ill.) Gavin Turner (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Brad Devito (Ridgefield, Conn.) ended 40th, 59th and 181st (tie), respectively.

Piskovatskov took home the highest placement in Sunday's junior men's epee competition, finishing in sixth place. Freshman Joshua Cole (Chappaqua, N.Y.) also fenced in the epee event, ending 48th on the day.

Sophomore Kasey Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was the sole representative for the women's team on Sunday, competing in the junior women's foil event. Iverson finished in 102nd place.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Temple this weekend to compete in their final regular-season NCAA duel. Penn State will face off against St. John's, Princeton, UPenn, Brown and Stevens (men only) beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20.
