Fencing Wraps Up Regular Season at Temple

PHILADELPHIA ââ'¬" The Penn State fencing team concluded its regular season action today with a trip to the Temple Invitational. The Nittany Lions faced off against UPenn, Princeton, St. John's and Brown, with both the men's and women's teams ending 2-2 on the day.

Thanks to an undefeated performance by the sabre squad, the Penn State men handily took down Brown 20-7 in competition. The Nittany Lions also picked up a win against Princeton, 17-10.

Junior Howie Chan (Walnut, Calif.) and senior Nobuo Bravo (San Francisco, Calif.) led the foil team to a 4-0 sweep of all opponents at the duels. Chan and Bravo finished 9-2 and 7-3, respectively. Additionally, junior epee Patrick August (Las Vegas, Nev.) had a standout performance in Philadelphia, going 8-2 in the competition.

The men ended the competition in a 2-2 tie after dropping two close contests to UPenn and St. John's, both 13-14.

The women's team was able to find wins against UPenn and Brown at the duels. The Nittany Lions went 20-7 against the Quakers and 16-11 against the Bears.

Led by junior captain Jessie Radanovich (Tollhouse, Calif.), the women's epee squad could not be beaten and finished 4-0. Radanovich was just shy of an undefeated performance in today's competition, dropping only a single bout to St. John's. Radanovich finished 10-1 on the day.

The women also saw decisive performances from DeAna Oliver (Montclair, N.J.), Teodora Kakhiani (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Desree Ortega-Furgeson (Wyoming, Mich.). Oliver and Kakhiani went 8-3 and 7-3, respectively, on sabre, and Ortega-Furgeson finished 8-4 on foil.

The women's team dropped two of its contests today, losing to Princeton 11-16 and St. John's 13-14.

The Nittany Lions have concluded their regular season competition for 2015-16. The team will begin preparing for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic / South Regionals, which will be held at Lafayette College Saturday, March 12. Competition will begin at 8 a.m.
