UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team repeated as champions of the Rutherford Intercollegiate led by freshman Charles Huntzinger's individual title on the Blue Course in University Park, Pennsylvania.
The team title marked the 24th time Penn State has won its home event and Huntzinger brought home the 19th individual championship, the first since teammate JD Dornes tied atop the leaderboard in 2013.
"Really proud of our team," says head coach Greg Nye. "These guys really stepped up in the final round today and separated from an outstanding effort by West Virginia."
Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) led the way with a tournament low five-under 66 to finish with a 203 overall. JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) finished tied for fourth after a one-under 70 to card a 208 after 54 holes. Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) and Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) tied for 15th overall at 217 after rounds of 73 and 74, respectively. Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) rounded out the starters with his best round of the tournament coming in at a one-over 72 finishing in 31st with 223.
"JD had a great tournament and for Charles this was a very sweet individual win after nearly winning both the Kingsmill and Seminole Intercollegiates," Nye continues. "He has had one tremendous regular season."
Individually Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) led the way finishing in ninth with 214 total. Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) ended one stroke back at 215, while Connor Raeman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Evan Santa (Edgewater, Md.) finished with 226 and 228 respectively.
Following Penn State on the team leaderboard was West Virginia at 853 and Xavier at 861. On the individual side of things Jose Montano of Xavier beat out Alan Cooke of West Virginia in a tie breaker for second at 207 putting Cooke in third. JD Dornes and Max Sear from West Virginia then tied for fourth.
The Lions return to action April 22-24 for the Big Ten Championship in Newburgh, Indiana.
