Nittany Lions Down Golden Flashes 6-1 in Exhibition Match

Aug. 17, 2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State field hockey took the field Wednesday afternoon against Kent State, emerging with a 6-1 win in the exhibition matchup at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.

"I thought we greatly improved out possession game out of the backfield," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss.

"The midfielders and the forwards were well connected; I thought the forwards did a really good job of setting up the scoring opportunities. I think Moira did a really good job of not only scoring goals but setting up goals. I thought the strikers were really working hard to get pressure on the ball, I thought that was a real positive."

"I was just real excited to play with everyone," said junior forward Moira Putsch.

"Going into preseason I felt like I'd been waiting for this for a really long time and I think we all came out today and were really excited and pumped to play together. I think we felt more connected today than we have the entire preseason, I think coming together as a team, meant a lot to us and to me as well.

"I think our connectedness this year is a lot better," said senior forward Brooke Birosik.

"Im reading my teammates more than last year and we're holding each other accountable. I think we're trying to be more competitive in our practices so that those practices will translate over to game day."

"We're definitely having a lot of fun as we continue through the preseason," added Putsch.

Penn State dominated the exhibition match scoring six goals from two players as Moria Putsch and Brooke Birosik each notched hat tricks, while Birosik added two assist as well.

Penn State will host Drexel in their final exhibition game of the 2016 preseason on Saturday Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. ET before opening the season at home against Old Dominion August 26 at 6 p.m. ET.
