UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State women's golf team begins their 2016 season in Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in the third annual East & West Match Play Challenge hosted by the Universities of Wisconsin and Michigan.
The tournament lasts three days, beginning on Sunday and concluding on Tuesday. Competition will be played at the University of Michigan's Radrick Farms Golf Course.
The tournament is formatted to have a total of 36-holes played on Sunday to seed teams for match play. Following that, Monday and Tuesday will be match play where the top four seeded teams will play in the championship bracket, while the remaining four play in the consolation bracket.
Eight teams are competing in this year's tournament, five of which are Big Ten teams. Penn State is joined by Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Nebraska representing the Big Ten, while Kentucky, Oregon, and UC Davis make up the rest of the field.
Head coach Denise St. Pierre has a team filled with young talent, and that shows in the starting lineup traveling to Michigan this weekend.
Two familiar names traveling, now sophomores this year, Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) and Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) competed in the East & West Match last year.
Another sophomore competing is Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.), who cracked into the starting lineup in the spring season last year and proved to the coaches she, should stay there.
While the other two players Ashni Dhruva (Katy, Texas) and Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) are both newcomers, competing in their first collegiate golf tournament.
In last year's tournament, Penn State was in the consolation bracket beating UC Davis and then going on to claim sixth place after losing to SMU.
The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
