MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Penn State cross country teams wrapped up competition at the 31st annual Roy Griak Invitaional Saturday afternoon at the the Les Bolstad Golf course in Minneapolis, MN.
The Nittany Lion women posted an impressive third-place finish with a team score of 145 points in a field of 34 teams and recorded wins over nationally ranked squads No. 6 Boise State, No. 10 Michigan, No. 17 Iowa State and No. 20 San Francisco.
Tessa Barrett moved herself into the front pack of runners from the gun, working her way up to fifth-place after a few short minutes of running.
Barrett, along with Elizabeth Chikotas represented Penn State at the front, followed closely by Jillian Hunsberger who finished strong down the stretch as the top Nittany Lion.
Hunsberger (9th), Barrett (12th) and Chikotas (13th) combined to record three top 15 finishes on the day running times of 22:06, 22:08 and 22:09, respectively.
Rounding out scoring for the Nittany Lion women were Greta Lindsley and Kathryn Munks finishing 51st and 60th, respectively. Also competing for Penn State were Julie Kocjancic (78th) and Victoria Crawford (85th).
For the men, it was Tim McGowan who led the way for Penn State early running right along side the leaders for the first 2K of the race. Around the 4K mark, sophomore Colin Abert asserted himself as the top runner for the Nittany Lions and held the top spot through the finish.
Abert finished 41st (25:53), followed by McGowan in 72nd (26:17), Bobby Hill in 107th (26:48), Conrad Lippert in 147th (27:17), and John McGowan in 154th running 27:32. Also competing for Penn State were Brandon Tubby and Jaxson Hoey who finished 167th and 181st, respectively, running times of 27:43 and 28:08.
The men's team finished 19th with a team score of 523.
Penn State will hit the course next on Oct. 14 when the Nittany Lions host the Penn State Open at the Blue & White Course in University Park.
