Men's Tennis Concludes Opening Weekend at Ivy Plus Invitational

September 25, 2016 - UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; The Nittany Lion men's tennis team concluded a very successful opening weekend this afternoon at the split-squad Ivy Plus Invitational. Both troops of blue and white, one at Princeton University and the other at University of Pennsylvania, posted impressive results.

During the final day of the tournament the Lions performed well. Matt Galush (Cary, NC) and Henry Gordon (New Braunfels, TX) defeated Bryant's Kuhar/Kliger doubles pair 9-7. Ben Lieb (Newtown Square, PA) and Gabriel Nemeth (Brasilia, Brazil) were defeated in a tough 9-7 match against Princeton's Holden/Wasserman pair. David Kohan (Sydney, Australia) and Dolidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) were also topped in a hard fought 8-6 match.

The singles matches were a bit more lucrative. Kohan faced Cancilla from Penn and won 6-3, 6-4. Nemeth came away with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win against Harvard's Weber. Noah Sutter (New York, NY) was defeated by Kuhar, playing for Bryant, in a 6-2, 6-2 match. Gordon played Jakubowski, also from Bryant, and came out on top 6-2, 6-0. Lieb battled Hill from Cornell and finished with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win to claim the flight title.

"I thought, on the last day, we played the best tennis we have in this tournament" said head coach Jeff Zinn. "I was very impressed with Zach Lieb. He won his flight and finished undefeated for the weekend. From the Princeton location, Nemeth did well. I'm also pleased with freshman Christian Lakoseljac, he beat Wisconsin's best player from last year. Overall, it was an outstanding tournament to evaluate players and have an idea of what to work on for the next few weeks before the Notre Dame Invitational."

"I am very pleased with our last day of the tournament," said associate head coach Paul Tobin from Penn. "We still have work to do, but all in all it was a good weekend."

The Ivy Plus Tournament concluded play today. The Nittany Lions' next battle will be October 7-9 at the Notre Dame Invitational.
