UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Eight different Nittany Lions score goals and sophomore Chris Funkey (Orland Park, Ill.) registers his first career shutout as No. 10 Penn State defeats Arizona State, 8-0, in non-conference men's ice hockey action this afternoon from Pegula Ice Arena.

PSU improves to 11-1-1 on the year while ASU falls to 2-11-0. Penn State, who has the nation's longest unbeaten streak of 11 games (10-0-1), is also in the midst of a program best nine game winning streak as well as an eight game home winning streak as they complete their fourth consecutive sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Nittany Lions erupted for five first period goals including four in a span of 4:09 to go into the first intermission with a commanding 5-0 lead.
  • A strong offensive zone battle by freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) and senior Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alb.) resulted in the puck on Richard's stick in the slot and the senior fired off the pipe and in for the 1-0 lead at 9:19 of the opening frame.
  • The Lions then used a power-play goal from sophomore Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) at 11:01 before the sophomore used a no look behind the back pass to freshman Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) who potted PSU's fourth short-handed tally of the season just 1:17 later for the 3-0 score.
  • Sophomore Vince Pedrie (Rochester, Minn.) was then the beneficiary of senior Zach Saar (Richland, Mich.) leaving the penalty box as the two skated in on an odd-man rush and Saar found Pedrie on the right side of the crease for the easy score and the 4-0 lead at 13:28.
  • Sophomore Kevin Kerr (Bensalem, Pa.) add the fifth Nittany Lion goal of the opening frame as he ripped a shot from the slot that lit the lamp at 16:14 for the 5-0 lead after one period of play.
  • Freshman Liam Folkes (Scarborough, Ont.) would add his first career tally at 15:45 of the second period as he banged home a rebound off junior Trevor Hamilton's (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) initial bid for the 6-0 margin.
  • Freshman Nikita Pavlychev (Yaroslavl, Russia) added some insurance in the third period as he ripped home a rebound after Sucese rang iron at 11:10 for the 7-0 lead.
  • Smirnov then added the eighth goal of the night for the Nittany Lions as he found the back of the net at 17:26 for the final score.

GOALTENDING
Funkey improves to 2-1-0 on the season after making 18 saves in his second career start to register his first career shutout. Robert Levin didn't fair too well for ASU stopping 10 of 14 shots in just 13:28 of action falling to 1-3-0 on the year. For the second consecutive night the Sun Devils were forced to make a first period goalie swap as on came Ryland Pashovitz who collected 33 saves over the final 46:32.
