Penn State Women's BasketballPenn State vs. WisconsinJan. 16, 2017

Coquese Washington | Head Coach Penn State

Q: Your team gave up 18 points in the first quarter, but proceeded to fix their mistakes in the second half. What did you tell your team at the half?
A: We start two freshmen and two sophomores and I think sometimes it takes them a little while to get a feel for how the game is going, how it will be played, what their opponent will be doing. I think sometimes, defensively, once we get to the latter half of the game they settle down a little bit. I think that is what happened tonight. They settled down and got to experience what we talked going into the game of how we are playing and how they would attack. Once we settled down and did a better job of contesting shots, we had a little bit more activity with our hands and being disruptive defensively. Then, we were able to get going in transition. I think that helped us a lot.

Q: What did you do differently defensively in this game than in games past?
A: We played a lot more man tonight. I think that helped us to stay connected to people, not give up as many wide-open shots. We are more aggressive when we plan man. I think we did a better job today of defending without fouling, not giving up too many free throws.

Q: How pleased were you with your team's ability to convert their defense into points on the board?
A: It is something that we really emphasize and try to take advantage of. The way the game is and the way our competition is, if you've got to execute against set defense all of the time, it can be tough. We want to take advantage of opportunities as much as possible. So, when we got some long rebounds, some turnovers, we wanted to be aggressive and attack in transition. We went on little spurts that helped us in particular in the third quarter.

Q: How key are the contributions off the bench?
A: I think they are critical. I think it's critical that we get pieces from everybody. I think we are at our best when we are not relying on one or two people. I think the last game that we played Amari (Carter) and Teniya (Page) carried us from a points standpoint. They didn't score as many points tonight, but I think they did a good job of running the team, spreading the ball around, getting their teammates great looks that they could convert. They played with a sense of selflessness and comradery. It extends from the offensive end to the defensive end and it gives us a lot of confidence.

Lindsey Spann | Guard | Jr.

Q: Lindsey you were 3-for 6-from downtown today. What did you see that Wisconsin was giving you and what was your mindset going in with shooting six 3-pointers?
A: One of our emphases for the game was to rebound and run so we wanted to get out and transition and I just sprinted ahead and the guards found me so I made open shots.

Sierra Moore | Guard | GS.

Q: Both of you were able to turn things around in the third quarter and go on a little bit of a hot streak. What changed for you guys in that second half?
A: We take pride in being a third quarter team and coming out strong. We talked about what we needed to do coming into the second half and we came out there and executed it.
