UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State softball team celebrated the careers of its six seniors in its final home game of the 2017 regular season against the No. 4 Golden Gophers of Minnesota Sunday, May 7. The Nittany Lions fell 10-1 to the Golden Gophers in five innings in the Big Ten Conference contest at Nittany Lion Softball Park and Beard Field.
The Blue and White honored Kristina Brackpool, Jessica Haug, Marlaina Laubach, Shelby Miller, Mia Monopoli and Sam Shanahan's career prior to the game against Minnesota.
Redshirt-sophomore Rebecca Ziegler (Tucson, Ariz.) notched the lone hit of the game for Penn State when she launched a leadoff home run over the right field wall in the bottom of the first inning. Laubach suffered the loss it the circle, throwing three complete innings, while freshmen Amanda Ferlisi (Hamilton, N.J.) and Madey Smith (Washington, N.J.) both saw time in relief.
Danielle Parlich knocked three hits, one RBI and scored once for the Golden Gophers and Allie Arneson drove in three runs for Minnesota. Sara Groenewegen earned the win in the circle, throwing three innings and Tori Finucane pitched two innings in relief.
Penn State took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Ziegler launched her fifth home run of the season over the right field fence. The Golden Gophers responded in the top of the second inning when a double with two runners on brought in two runs and put the lead into the hands of Minnesota, 2-1.
With two outs, a double into right center and a home run over the left field wall allowed the Gophers to take the 4-1 lead over the Blue and White in the top of the third inning. Minnesota continued to add on security runs in the top of the fourth inning, bringing in six runs on four hits to extend its lead to 10-1 over the Nittany Lions.
The Blue and White were unable to come back from the deficit, falling 10-1 in its final home contest of the 2017 season.
