With the 2017 women's soccer season slowly approaching, GoPSUsports.com is asking each member of the 2017 signing class a few questions in order to get to know them better. We are going to start out the series with midfielder Shea Moyer.
Moyer enrolled at Penn State for the 2017 spring semester and was able to join the team for spring soccer. A native of Wyomissing, Pa., Moyer attended Wyomissing Area High School and played club soccer for FC Revolution and Penn Fusion. In the classroom, she intends on majoring in kinesiology.
GoPSU: You enrolled in school early and joined the team for the spring semester. How did that help you with getting to know the school and the team?
SM: Enrolling a semester early at Penn State was the best decision I could have made. Instead of having to adjust to a new school and a new team in the fall right before the season starts, I was able to get acclimated to everything months before. I learned about the team culture and expectations, and was able to figure out what the team is like on and off the field. Everyone was so welcoming, and I already feel like a part of the team.
GoPSU: This summer you are spending some time in Seattle with a few of your Nittany Lion teammates. Tell us a little about that experience and what has been your favorite part so far?
SM: I'm so lucky to have spent the summer playing for the Sounders Women in Seattle with Charlotte Williams, Laura Freigang, Maddie Elliston, and Emily Ogle this summer. I've never been to Seattle before, so we all did some tourist-y things like seeing Pike Place Market, which was fun. But really, I'm just glad I had the opportunity to play soccer with some of my best friends all summer. We were able to bond with each other on and off the field which is going to help immensely this fall.
GoPSU: Your Dad, Jerry, was a member of the men's soccer team and your Mom, Janeen, was on the swimming team, what is it like carrying on that tradition of Penn State in your family and playing for the women's soccer team?
SM: Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to go to Penn State because that's where both of my parents went to school. It feels like I have been a Nittany Lion my whole life, and it's surreal now that I get to actually attend the school and play for the women's soccer team. It's really an honor to be a part of the Penn State family and I can't wait to carry on the tradition.
GoPSU: Prior to arriving at Penn State you attended 15 training camps with the U.S. Women's National Team at different age levels, what is your favorite trip or training camp?
SM: I really enjoyed going to Northern Ireland with the U-18 Women's National Team and playing with Kerry Abello in the Women's International Cup. We played some really competitive games against England, France, and Northern Ireland, and we also got to experience Ireland's culture. It was an awesome trip.
GoPSU: What is one thing the fans should know about Shea Moyer?
SM: Well, I'm a big dancer. That statement is sort of really false because I'm pretty short in stature and I don't think anyone would ever consider me a "dancer" because my dancing skills are slim, but I love dancing so you'll probably see some of that during the season.
