Cannon, Fretz Named FH Captains

Aug. 17, 2017

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Shay Cannon and Skyler Fretz were named team captains for the 2017 season Thursday morning following a team vote.

"I think Skyler and Shay are going to be outstanding captains," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss.

"There was just overwhelming support for those two and when you talk about the characteristics that they both have, they're both very open to listening, they're very caring people, they're both great competitors, they both just do a very good job of being a great teammate and looking after their teammates. I think they both have different characteristics; Skyler is a quiet leader but she knows the game well and when she does speak people listen. Shay has that emotional side that can bring the energy and get the team fired up and bring the intensity. They both bring two different styles but at the same time two different but very effective styles.

"I think that we both are very appreciative of how our teammates look up to us," said Cannon.

"It's something that we take very seriously, and I hope that we're able to lead our team to victories," Cannon continued. "I know Skyler deserves this, it's well earned, not given, and I'm very happy that I get to share this with her because I know that we are both motivated enough to help bring this team to the level that it needs to be. We want to do something different, and win a national championship, so we hope this is the year it all comes together."

"I think it's such an honor because our team chose us and that means they believe in us," said Fretz.

"I think if we all have trust on the team we'll get really far this season," Fretz continued. I think Shay deserves this, she's one of the hardest workers on this team. There have been hard practices where she's gone back after for extra work on those small things that make the difference late in the game.
