WTN: Nittany Lions Wrap Up Day One at Penn Invite

Sept. 22, 2017

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--The Penn State women's tennis team finished its opening matches at the UPenn Invitational today. The tournament continues through Sunday, September 23.

All four of the Nittany Lions that traveled played singles matches on the first day of competition. Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) started off strong with a win against Gaby Rosales of the University of Richmond 7-5, 6-4. But, Wikberg then fell to Jennifer Kerr of Columbia, the number one seeded player, 6-1, 6-1. Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) lost to Ananya Dua of Cornell 1-6, 6-1, 10-7.

Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China) lost to Nathalie Rodilosso of Princeton 7-6(7), 6-0. Hannah Kratky (Greenwich, Conn.) lost to Ali Pollack of Columbia 6-0, 6-2.

Wikberg/Svarre had a doubles match on day one and defeated McKee/Goodwin of Princeton 6-2. Xu/Kratky had a bye on day one of the doubles competition and will compete tomorrow.

"We would have liked to pick up some more wins today," said assistant coach Mike Fenwick. "But, I think the important thing is that we got match experience. This is the first tournament of the year, so we got out there and competed. The results are all a part of the process and wins are going to come."

Play will continue tomorrow for the doubles teams of Wikberg/Svarre and Xu/Kratky.
