UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 1 Penn State skated to a, 3-3, tie against No. 11 Ohio State while the Buckeyes earned the extra point with a seven-round shootout win this evening in Big Ten men's ice hockey action from Pegula Ice Arena.
With the tie the Nittany Lions move to 16-2-2 overall and 5-1-1-0 in Big Ten play while OSU now sits at 11-4-6 on the year and 2-2-1-1 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Nittany Lions opened the scoring taking advantage of a delayed penalty to register an extra attacker goal at 7:48 of the first period. Junior James Robinson (Cochrane, Alberta) lit the lamp due to great offensive zone pressure and two great passes from freshman classmates Kris Myllari (Kanata, Ontario) and Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) for the 1-0 lead.
- Ohio State evened the score in the second period as Josh Healey flicked a wrister through traffic from the left point beating PSU freshman Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) high-glove for the 1-1 score at 12:21.
- Sophomore Vince Pedrie (Rochester, Minn.) tilted the score back in favor of the hosts as he batted the puck out of mid-air near the left of the crease off a rebound for the 2-1 score at 18:26 of the middle frame.
- In the third period sophomore Alec Marsh (Bridgewater, N.J.) sandwiched a goal between a pair of Mason Jobst scores for a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation. Marsh's goal was set up by freshman Blake Gober (Colleyville, Tx.) and Pedrie at 12:41 of the final stanza.
- Penn State had some great chances late in the third period and also during a power-play in overtime, but OSU net-minder Christian Frey made some incredible saves and each team earned a point with the score tied 3-3 after the extra session.
- The first four rounds of the shootout went scoreless before freshman Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alberta) snuck one past Frey, however, Dakota Joshua answered for the visitors to keep things moving.
- Sam McCormick eventually ended things beating Jones high over the shoulder for the 2-1 shootout win after Frey had stopped Penn State senior David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) in the top half of the seventh round.
GOALTENDING
Frey was again incredible against the Nittany Lions stopping 56 shots to move to 5-2-3 on the season while Jones made 24 saves and is now 14-1-2 overall this season. Frey has now recorded 141 saves in three games against Penn State.
NOTES
- Penn State had a commanding 24-3 lead in shots during the first period, the 11th time this season the Nittany Lions have had 20+ shots in a period.
- Pedrie is now tied with Luke Juha '16 for the Penn State career defenseman record for goals with 15. He also now has a three-game point streak with multiple points in each. He has six multi-point games this season.
- This marks the first time all year that Penn State hasn't won when leading after two periods falling to 11-0-1 and the Nittany Lions are now 14-0-2 when leading after two periods of play.
- Penn State secured their second highest shot total of the season as the outshot Ohio State 59-27. PSU had 65 shots earlier this season against Canisius (10/28/2016).
- The Nittany Lions went 0-for-3 with the man-advantage while the Buckeyes cashed in on 1-of-4 power-play chances.
- Penn State dominated faceoffs on the evening going 52-28. Berger was 19-8 and senior Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) went 16-6.
