UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" In the final day of the 45th annual Penn State Garret Open, the Penn State men's fencing team was successful as it claimed first in saber and second in foil.
Penn State has a strong start to the day in the foil . Sophomore Mohamed Hassan (Saint Louis, Mo.) finished in second place with sophomore teammate Andrey Ostatnigrosh (Fresno, Calif.) placing eighth. Freshmen Shane Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Tomas Koeck (Fairfield, Conn.) finished in tenth and 11th place, and finishing not too far behind them was sophomore Andrew Grass (Burke,Va.) at 13th.
Junior Anton Piskovatskov (Houston, Texas) led Penn State in the epee with his 15th place finish. Freshman Stefan Nico Popovici (Katy, Texas) followed him in 17th.
Closing out this year's Garret Open was the men's saber. Junior Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.) gave Penn State their second championship of the Open, making him the 21st men's saber Garret Open champion for Penn State since 1973. Karol's teammate, and semi-final opponent, junior Marcel Dolegiewicz (Park Ridge, Ill.) finished in third place. Juniors Gavin Turner (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Matthew Lewicki (Oakland, N.J.) took sixth and tenth place, respectively, while senior Eduardo Lara (Queretaro, Mexico) took 11th and freshman Chase Pflueger (Highlands Ranch, Colo) took 16th.

Penn State will be in action next weekend when select Penn State fencers will participate in the Junior/Cadet/Y-14 NAC event. That starts Saturday, Nov. 11, and ends on Monday, Nov. 13.
