UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.-The Penn State women's tennis team completed play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational and the Hokie Invitational. Head coach Chris Cagle's squad finished out the fall season at these two tournaments.
Starting off at the Kitty Harrison Invitational, the Nittany Lions finished out the tournament with singles play, facing South Carolina in the finals singles matches of the weekend.
Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) retired in her match against Martins, losing 4-0 (ret.). Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) fell to Horvit 6-4, 6-0. Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) lost to Davies 6-1, 6-1. Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) finished with a loss against Cline 6-2, 6-3.
"We had portions of the weekend where we played very well. Today we struggled in some areas that we need to improve upon," said Cagle. "The time between now and the spring season will be a key one for our program in terms of improving on areas of emphasis that we will review with players over the next few weeks. As I said to start the fall, I am excited to see what this team can accomplish this year."
Finishing up with the Hokie Invitational, the team saw action in both singles and doubles.
In singles, Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) fell to Decamps of George Washington 6-3, 6-2. Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China) dropped to Herlogsson of George Washington 6-2, 6-0. The doubles team of Xu and Hannah Kratky (Greenwich, Conn.) fell in a tight one against Acierto and Fraser of Radford 7-5, for the Nittany Lions only doubles match of the day.
These were the final tournaments of the fall season for the Nittany Lions. The team will be back in action in January to kick off an exciting spring season.
