UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Sophomore Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) stopped 45 shots to help lift No. 13 Penn State past No. 6 Ohio State, 5-2, in Big Ten Conference action this evening from Pegula Ice Arena.
The win increases the Nittany Lions' unbeaten streak to 11 games (8-0-3), which is the second longest in program history just behind a 13-game streak they accomplished last season. PSU moves to 13-7-3 on the season and 6-4-3-2 in conference play leapfrogging past OSU into second place in the Big Ten standing with 23 points. The Buckeyes fall to 14-5-4 overall and 7-5-1-0 in league action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring as sophomore Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) slid home an indirect pass off the end boards by senior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) for the 1-0 lead at 5:18 of the first period.
- The Nittany Lions extended the lead to 2-0 off an odd-man rush as Smirnov slide the puck across the slot from right to left connecting with classmate Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) for the tap in goal at 16:49 of the opening period.
- A fast paced second period resulted in freshman Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.) sandwiching a power-play goal at 7:46 between a pair of man-advantage tallies by Ohio State's Mason Jobst at 3:19 and 10:10. Barratt was able to fire home a rebound after both junior classmates Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) and Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) had a whack at it in the crease for the 3-2 margin.
- Penn State extended their lead as Sturtz fired home a power-play goal, after toe-dragging into the right slot he flicked a shot that beat OSU net-minder Sean Romeo five-hole for the 4-2 edge at 16:29 of the third period.
- Barratt would seal the game as he hit the empty net from center ice after freshman classmate Alex Limoges (Winchester, Va.) used a strong fore-check to free the puck from a Buckeye defensemen with just 78 ticks remaining in regulation.
GOALTENDING
- Jones was sensational all game stopping a season-high 45 shots, the second most in his career and just his second career game with 40-plus saves, as he improves to 12-5-2 on the year.
- Romeo falls to 12-5-4 on the year after a 31 save performance.
NOTES
- Tonight marked the 69th consecutive sellout at Pegula Ice Arena.
- Penn State was outshot for just the third time all year as the Buckeyes held the 47-36 advantage in shots on goal.
- Ohio State went 2-for-4 with the man-advantage while the Nittany Lions were 2-for-3 as they have now gone six straight games with at least one power-play goal.
- PSU improves to 8-2-3 on the year when scoring first and 12-0-2 when leading after two periods of play.
- Berger played in his 100th career game this evening becoming the first Nittany Lion to suit up in 100 consecutive games to begin his career in Hockey Valley.
- Berger also extended his point-streak to five games, just one game shy of his career long, while Sturtz improved on his career-best point-streak, which now stands at nine games (4-10-14) and is just one-game shy of Penn State's all-time record long point streak of 10 games held by David Goodwin `17 and Smirnov.
- Sturtz also collected the 28th multi-point game of his career and his 10th this season after registering one goal and one assist on the night. The junior's 30 points on the season are good for tied third in the entire nation and second in the Big Ten.
- Trevor Hamilton also collected a pair of assists for the Nittany Lions securing his eight multi-point effort on the year and the 11th of his career. With his two assists Hamilton moves past Vince Pedrie for third all-time in assists by defensemen in Penn State history while also moving into a tie for the national lead for points by a defensemen with 22.
- Barratt secured a career-high three points on the evening with a pair of goals and an assist securing just his second multi-point effort this season.
- Biro extends his career-best point-streak to seven games (1-9-10) while registering his ninth career multi-point game and his sixth of the season.
- Smirnov secures the 19th multi-point game of his career and his sixth this season with one goal and one assist.
- Sucese extends his point-streak to five games as he scored his seventh goal of the streak in the first period.
- Jones' 20 second period saves were the most saves he's ever had in a single-period and just two shy of Eamon McAdam's program record of 22.
- The 22 shots allowed in the second period by Penn State were the most they have allowed in a single-period all season.
