UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lion men's fencing team began its portion of the 2018 NCAA Championships on day three of the event. The four-day Championship is being hosted at Penn State's Multi-Sport Facility.

Penn State currently sits at fourth place with 119 points. Notre Dame still leads after three days with 157 points. Right behind them is Columbia with 140 points, and in third is Ohio State with 122 points.

Head Coach Wes Glon said "We still have one more day to go. There are a lot of bouts, and if the saber guys (Mackiewicz and Metryka) do as well as they did today tomorrow then we will hope that we will well. I still see Andrew and Metyrka in contention for the individual title."

Freshman Sebastiano Bicego (Vicenza, Italy) kicked off the event for Penn State in men's foil. Bicego finished the first round with a record of 4-3. After his round two performance, Bicego had a 5-6 record on the day. With a 2-2 record in round three to end the day, Bicego sits right ouside the top-ten with a 7-8 record and an indicator of plus two.

Penn State's Anton Piskovatskov (Houston, Texas) and the rest of the men's epee followed foil on the day. Piskovatskov started the day with a 2-5 record in the first round. In round two, Piskovatskov had an unlucky streak as he went 0-4 while recording at least three touches in each bout. Piskovatskov finished day three with an overall record of 3-12 after going 1-3 in round three of epee.

Closing out day three of the event was men's saber. Representing Penn State was senior Andrew Mackiewicz (Westwood, Mass.) and Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.).

Mackiewicz had a 5-2 record at the end of the first round, which placed him in fifth going into round two. Mackiewicz moved up one spot after he went 3-1 in the second round. Mackiewicz finished day three with a record of 11-4, which placed him in fourth, after going 3-1 in the third round.

Metryka started the day with a 3-4 record in the first round. A 3-1 record in the second round moved Metryka up to 12th on the day before he advanced to the final round of day three. In the third round, Metryka had a 3-1 record which increased his record to 9-6 overall and placed him at ninth in the tournament.

The 2018 NCAA Fencing Championships conclude at the Penn State Multi-Sport Facility tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. The men's competition will continue, culminating in the crowning of three individual champions (one in each weapon) later in the day.
