HARRISONBURG, Va. - The 17th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions look to rebound from a tough overtime loss last Saturday as they travel to No. 7 James Madison for a mid-week affair.

THE MATCHUP

  • This marks the 33rd meeting between the two schools dating back to 1981 and the sixth straight year they have met with Penn State holding the 21-11 edge in the all-time series.
  • Over the last eight games both James Madison and Penn State have each won four with five of those games being single-goal victories, however, The Nittany Lions have won the last three games including a 19-14 victory to end JMU's season during the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

SCOUTING THE DUKES

  • James Madison saw its season come to an end last year at the hands of the Nittany Lions in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 19-14 loss.
  • The Dukes finished the 2017 season 14-7 and 5-1 in the CAA defeating Elon 15-7 to capture the CAA Championship.
  • JMU returns five of its top six scorers from last season's roster and are led early on this season by Elena Romesburg and Kristen Gaudian with 22 and 21 goals, respectively. Katie Kerrigan has also dished out 17 assists while Hanna Haven and Haley Warden have each added 10 goals apiece.
  • The Dukes are without starting goaltender Emily Poelma from last season who was one of the top goalies in the nation with a 9.38 goals against average and a .462 save percentage. But, they return Ellie Harmeyer who did see action in 12 games last season registering a 6.88 goals against average and a .490 save percentage.
  • Harmeyer has struggled at times this season, but remains unbeaten with a 4-0-0 record a 10.32 goals against average and a .344 save percentage.
  • The Dukes rank fifth in the nation in scoring offense averaging 16.80 goals per game, however, their defense ranks 30th in the nation allowing 10.40 goals per game.

SCORING OFFENSE

  • Penn State is averaging 15.40 goals per contest to rank second in the Big Ten and tied for 12th in the nation over the first five games of the season.
  • The Nittany Lions have a season-high 19 goals scored against Duquesne and have scored at least 15 goals in three-straight games.

DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES

  • After graduating their starting goaltender, a pair of starting defensive players and arguably one of the best defensive midfielders in program history following last season, the Nittany Lions have lacked consistency on the defensive side of the ball early this season.
  • Penn State ranks last in the Big Ten and tied for 65th in the nation allowing 12.40 goals per game and have held just one opponent below ten goals over the first five games this season.

TAKE WHAT IS GIVEN TO YOU

  • Penn State has been excellent on the free-position this season scoring 31 of its 77 goals (40 percent) from the 8-meter.
  • The Nittany Lions rank third in the Big Ten and third in the nation with their 31 free-position tallies while their 54.2 percent conversion (31-for-57) ranks third in the Big Ten and 14th in the nation.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

  • Penn State is led by a three-headed scoring attack of senior Katie O'Donnell, junior Madison Carter and sophomore Maria Auth.
  • O'Donnell has been a force scoring a goal in 27 straight games while adding multiple goals in 13 straight contests. Her 16 goals rank second on the team and seventh in the Big Ten.
  • Auth has added multiple goals in eight straight games and after tying her career-high with four goals last Saturday she ranks third on the team with 13 goals this season.
  • Carter leads the team and ranks second in the Big Ten with 18 goals also good for tied 19th in the nation as she has scored at least one goal in eight straight games dating back to last season.

MOVIN' ON UP

  • Both O'Donnell and Carter continue to work their way up the Penn State all-time goals list where O'Donnell currently sits fourth with 156 career goals and Carter ranks tied for 12th with 136.
  • While it will be hard for O'Donnell to reach Tami Worley '89 in third with 230 goals, Carter needs just 20 goals to crack the top five all-time at Penn State.

NEXT UP

Penn State remains on the road as they travel to Albany on Sunday for a 12 p.m. contest.
