UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A mix of familiar and new events will comprise the 2018 fall schedule for the Penn State men's golf team. Three tournaments, the Rod Myers Invitational, Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate and Janney Invitational are on the slate again two events appearing on the Nittany Lions' schedule for the first time: the Bearcat Invitational and Grandover Collegiate.
Penn State will open the fall season at the Rod Myers Invitational Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 8-9, a tournament named for the longtime Duke men's golf coach who lost his battle with leukemia in 2007. In 2017, PSU recorded a team total of 859 at the Duke University Golf Club, a score that ranks in the program's top 25 all-time for a 54-hole tournament.
The Nittany Lions make a return trip to the Janney Invitational in Richmond, Va. VCU has played host to the event, held in 2017 at the Tuckahoe Creek Course at the Country Club of Virginia, since 2005. Penn State brought home two tournament trophies from this tournament in 2006 and again in 2007.
The third event in September, the Bearcat Invitational, sends Penn State to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Coldstream Country Club. This will be the first-ever trip for the program to the Queen City for a tournament.
The Nittany Lions return to the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorne Club Friday-Sunday, Oct. 12-14. This will be the seventh-straight appearance for PSU at the tournament hosted by East Tennessee State. Penn State won the team title for the second time in 2017 and rising senior Charles Huntzinger was the individual medalist in the 2016 event and holds a share of the record for the event's best three-round score.
A two-day event Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 27-28, at the Grandover Collegiate will close the fall portion of the 2018-19 schedule. Now in its 14th year and seventh at the Grandover Resort, the tournament takes place on a course designed by world-renowned designers David Graham and Gary Panks. Several NCAA events have been held on the course since it opened in 2012.
The spring 2019 men's golf schedule will be released at a later date, but will include the 43rd annual Rutherford Intercollegiate held at the Penn State Golf Courses' Blue Course in April.
The Nittany Lions, under Nye, the longest-tenured coach in the history of the men's golf program, have made 21 trips to the NCAA regionals and five trips to the NCAA national championships, the most recent in 2017. Penn State stands as one of only four Big Ten teams to qualify for four-straight regionals with appearances in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. PSU also competed in four-straight regionals from 2007-2010.
