Anna Simon Named B1G Freshman of the Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; September 4, 2018 –True freshman Anna Simon (Hanau, Germany) has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the week ending Sept. 2, 2018.  The honor for the Nittany Lion defender is Penn State's second Big Ten weekly award of the young season.

Simon scored her first collegiate goals to lead Penn State to a lop-sided 4-0 win at Temple on Friday, Aug. 31. Simon found the back of the cage on two different penalty corners, spurring Penn State to victory. She also anchored a defense that posted its second straight shutout as Penn State held Temple to just one shot. Simon's goals came off five shots, part of a 42-1 shot edge for the Nittany Lions. She helps anchor a defense that has allowed only ten shots in two games.

Simon's honor is Penn State's second in as many weeks after Cori Conley (Oak Park, Ill.) was Defensive Player of the week last week (Aug. 26).

Penn State starts a busy week with the first of three games tonight.  The Nittany Lions host No. 10 Princeton tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 7:30 p.m. and Kent State on Friday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m.  Both games will be at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.  Penn State will then return to Temple in Philadelphia to face off against No. 3 Duke at 10:30 a.m. in yet another top 10 match-up.
