OPENING TIPS
- Penn State looks to move to 2-0 on the young season when the Lady Lions welcome #24/RV California to the Bryce Jordan Center for a Sunday matinée.
- The Lady Lions opened the season in thrilling fashion Thursday night as PSU erased a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Providence 76-74.
- Penn State returns 80-plus percent of points, FG made, 3FG made, FT made, assists and steals from a 2017-18 squad that finished 16-16 and made a WNIT appearance.
IF PENN STATE BEATS CAL
- PSU would beat a ranked team for the first time since Jan. 18, 2018 when the Lady Lions defeated #25/21 Rutgers, 70-67.
- The Lady Lions would improve to 2-0 for the second-straight season and third time in the last four years.
- Penn State would move to 29-6 in the Bryce Jordan Center dating back to the start of the 2016-17 season.
SCOUTING CAL
- Cal earned a No. 24 ranking in the AP Preseason Poll and comes to State College with a 1-0 record on the young season.
- The Golden Bears held off Houston 80-79 in their season opener Tuesday with the help of 37 points from Kristina Anigwe.
- Anigwe was 13-for-20 from the field and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. She also added 13 rebounds.
- Cal returns significant depth and experience from last season's team, which went 21-11 and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
- A three-time honorable mention All-American, Anigwe entered her senior season already ranked among the program's all-time leaders in scoring, rebounding, and field goal percentage. The 2016 Pac-12 and USBWA National Freshman of the Year, Anigwe was recently named to the 2019 Lisa Leslie Award Watch as one of the top centers in the nation, and also landed a spot on the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team for the third year in a row.
THE LAST MEETING
- Penn State and Cal have only met once before, with the Lady Lions earning a 91-77 win in the championship game of the 1990 Golden Bear Classic.
- The Lady Lions went on to finish that season 29-2 and earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
CARDIAC KIDS
- If the 2018-19 season opener was any indication of what's to come this season, it's sure going to be exciting.
- Penn State erased a 14-point fourth quarter deficit by outscoring Providence 23-9 in the final 10 minutes to claim a thrilling 76-74 victory.
- Sophomore Sam Breen played hero as she hit a pair of game-winning free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining to cap a strong nine-point second-half effort. Senior Amari Carter scored eight points in the fourth-quarter comeback and finished the night with a team-best 15.
- It marked the first time that Penn State rallied from a 15-point deficit to win in six years. The last time the Lady Lions erased a 15-point deficit was on Nov. 24, 2012 in an 85-73 win at Cal State Northridge. Penn State trailed by 17 with 5:52 left in the first half in that game.
- Five Lady Lions finished in double figures for the first time since Jan. 3, 2018 against Indiana.
THE BIG 200
- After Thursday's season-opening victory, head coach Coquese Washington needs just two more wins to reach the 200-victory mark for her career. She currently holds a 198-151 career record. Over her 11-plus seasons on the Penn State sidelines, Washington has enjoyed three Big Ten regular-season championships and seven national postseason appearances, including four NCAA Tournament berths.
