Women’s Tennis Prepares for Split Weekend

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The Penn State women's tennis team will compete in two matches this coming weekend, with one contest on the road and the other at home. On Friday, Feb. 1 the Nittany Lions will travel to face Rutgers at 12:30 p.m. in the East Brunswick Racquet Club in East Brunswick, N.J. Penn State will then return home on Sunday, Feb. 3 to face Cornell at 10 a.m. in the Indoor Tennis Center.

Penn State improved to 4-0 on the season after defeating George Washington and Towson, 7-0, last Sunday in the Indoor Tennis Center.

"Rutgers is going be a good test for us on Friday," said head coach Chris Cagle. "Even though it is not an official Big Ten match, it will still have a Big Ten feel and it will be our first road match of the season. I look forward to traveling with the team and using the road trip to become even closer. We will have a quick turnaround with Cornell coming in on Sunday. The start time for Sunday is 10 a.m., so we really could use a strong crowd to come out early to give us the home court advantage. I look forward to the weekend and seeing the team compete at a high level!"

LAST TIME OUT

In a double header against George Washington and Towson, the Nittany Lions dropped only two sets in total to continue their red hot start.

Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) has been leading the charge for the Nittany Lions in both doubles and singles play. O'Gorman has yet to drop a set in doubles or singles play, this spring.

Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia), Gracey Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Sydney Weinberg (Winchester, Mass.) all made their spring debuts in singles against Towson, racking up three wins.

LOOKING INTO THE SCARLET KNIGHTS

Penn State will be opening its road schedule against Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights opened their season by sweeping Delaware, 7-0. The top three singles positions in that match all went to a third set with the Scarlet Knights all pulling through for the win.

Maya Jacobs, led the Scarlet Knights in the fall with nine singles wins. Tess Fisher and Kat Muzik had a team-high nine doubles wins as duo in the fall.

Penn State and Rutgers last faced each other in 2016 where Rutgers won, 5-2. Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) was one of two Nittany Lions to win their singles match.
