Men’s Tennis Readies for Pair of Road Matches

University Park, Pa. – Penn State men's tennis will travel to Cambridge, Ma. to take on Harvard (1-2) Saturday, Feb. 2, and Vanderbilt (3-1) Sunday, Feb. 3.

Last Time Out

The Nittany Lions traveled to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the Jerry Simmons Invitational, Jan. 26-27. The team earned wins over the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, 4-3, and USF, 4-2, on their way to facing LSU in the championship match. Penn State defeated the Tigers, 4-2, to claim the championship crown and start off its spring season 3-0.

Christian Lakoseljac (King City, Ontario, Canada) led the way, going undefeated in doubles competition paired with Christos Antonopoulos (Athens, Greece),  and defeating No. 114 Rafael Wagner, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to clinch the tournament win for the Blue and White. His performance earned him Big Ten Player of the week honors for the first time in his career.  

Scouting the Crimson

Harvard started off its season with a loss against Buffalo, 4-3. The Crimson then went on to snap Auburn's seven-match win streak in a dominant 6-1 win. In their most recent action, the Crimson lost to No. 21 Alabama, 4-2.

Sophomore Robert Wrzesinski has gone undefeated so far this season at the No. 2 spot, including a win over No. 41 Patrick Kaukovalta of the Crimson Tide.

Harvard's roster features one ranked singles player in No. 121 Andy Zhou and a ranked doubles pair in No. 37 Brian Shi/Logan Weber.

Penn State has a 1-14 all-time record against Harvard. The two teams last met in the 2010 season when the No. 62 Crimson emerged with the win, 4-1.

Looking into the Commodores

Vanderbilt started its season strong with wins over Northwestern, 5-2, and Tennessee State, 7-0, before losing to Notre Dame, 4-0. In the Commodores defeated Drake, 4-2, in their most recent outing.

The Dores have performed well in doubles so far this season, winning the doubles point in three of four matches.

Vanderbilt has a lone ranked singles player in No. 62 Billy Rowe and the two ranked doubles duos of No. 47 Cameron Klinger/Rowe and No. 50 Panu Virtanen/Rowe.

The Nittany Lions have an all-time 0-1 record against the Commodores. The teams' only meeting came in the 2017 season when Vanderbilt came out with the 4-1 victory.

The Nittany Lions will face Charlotte in their home opener at the Indoor Tennis Center Friday, Beb. 8.
