UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania – Penn State women's hockey freshman defender Rene Gangarosa was awarded the College Hockey America Rookie of the Week award for her individual performance in Penn State's lone game last week at fourth-ranked Princeton.
Gangarosa picked up primary assists on both Nittany Lions' goals for her first multi-point game of her career.
This marks the second time the Rochester, N.Y. native has won CHA Rookie of the Week. She did so after the first weekend of the season Sept. 28-29 when she scored the game-winning goal in Penn State's 4-2 win over Colgate.
For the season, Gangarosa has a goal and four assists while taking only two penalties all season. She also holds a team-high +7 rating while ranking fourth on the team with 36 blocked shots.
This marks the sixth time this season a Nittany Lion freshman has won CHA Rookie of the Week:
Gangarosa – October 1
Loli Fidler – October 29
Izzy Heminger – November 19
Jessica Adolfsson – January 14
Heminger – January 22
Gangarosa – February 4
The Nittany Lions have tied a program high for CHA Rookie of the Week award winners in a single season which was last accomplished in 2014-15.
Gangarosa and the rest of the Nittany Lions return home to Pegula Ice Arena this weekend, Feb. 8-9, to take on in-state conference foe Robert Morris. Start time for both games are set for 1 p.m.
