UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's golf team opens spring tournament play Monday-Tuesday, March 4-5, in the Colleton River Collegiate Invitational in Bluffton, South Carolina. This is the second-straight year the Nittany Lions will participate in this tournament and the third time in the last six years.

"We are certainly looking forward to this event at Colleton River," said Penn State men's golf coach Greg Nye. "We have familiarity with this golf course, but the wind intensity and direction can change the strategies from hour to hour on this lowland layout."

Representing the Nittany Lions in their first spring tournament are JD Hughes, Charles Huntzinger, Ryan Davis, Ryan Dornes and Alec Bard. Sophomore James McHugh will compete as an individual.

With views of the Atlantic Ocean and Port Royal Sound on 11 of its 18 holes, the Pete Dye Course at the Colleton River Club opened in 1998. In addition to numerous USGA qualifying events, it has also played host to the South Carolina amateur championship for several years. The par-72, 7,198-yard layout was selected by Golf Magazine as One of the Top 100 Greatest Courses in the U.S. and even Dye proclaimed this is "the best course I have ever built."

Monday's play consists of two rounds of continuous play with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start with Penn State grouped with Wisconsin and Georgia Southern. Tuesday's hole starts and times will be determined after Monday's results. Live scoring will be available here.

All five in the starting lineup played in this event last spring with Bard tying for fourth overall with a 2-over 218 as an individual competitor. Both Bard and former Nittany Lion Cole Miller shared the low place for Penn State. Penn State posted the lowest final round score at 6-under 282 and tied for fourth in the team standings.

Davis posted a low-score 69 for Penn State in the final round. Both Miller and Huntzinger helped the final day's tally by both scoring 70 in the final round. Bard carded his career-low 70 in his first round of action at this event.
