Women's Golf Opens Spring Break Trip at River Landing Classic

WALLACE, N.C. – The Penn State women's golf team opens its spring break trip as they travel to the River Landing Classic Tournament hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington at the River Landing Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State began its spring season at the UCF Challenge in early February and set a new 54-hole program scoring record finishing ninth in the 16 team field with a final score of 6-under (858).
  • The Nittany Lions' final round score of 280 (8-under) is also the third lowest 18-hole score in program history each of which has occurred since the start of the 2018 fall season a mere six months ago.
  • Senior (Yardley, Pa.) carded three-straight rounds of even-par or better finishing in a tie for 12th following her best 54-hole score this season of 212 (4-under).
  • Junior (Lebanon, N.J.) also shot three consecutive rounds of even-par or better finishing the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 1-under, 71, to land in a tie for 20th position at 2-under (214) marking the first time in her collegiate career she has finished under par as the 214 becomes a new career low 54-hole score.
  • Playing as an individual, junior (New Hope, Pa.) finished the tournament with her best score this season of 1-over (217) and in a tie for 33rd.

THE TEAM

  • Coach St. Pierre isn't making any changes from her starting lineup from a month ago as Rogowicz and McLean will join senior classmates Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) and Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) as well as freshman Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) in the starting five while Herr will once again compete as an individual.
  • Basso leads the team with a 72.25 stroke average including nine rounds of even-par or better this season and three top-10's including a pair of runner-up finishes. Willis is second on the team with a 72.94 stroke average and has the lone individual first place honor with her record-setting Nittany Lion Invitational Championship.
  • As a team, the Nittany Lions are averaging 291.19 per round and have four top-5 finishes in six events so far this season. Penn State's stroke average is down more than 4.5 shots per round from its 2017-18 total of 295.77.
  • In the 19th year of the Tournament, this marks just the fifth time Penn State has tee'd it up at the River Landing finishing second in 2016 and first in 2017.

THE FIELD

  • Rutgers is the only other Big Ten team in the16-team field joining the Nittany Lions at the River Landing. Boston College, Campbell, Charlotte, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Georgetown, Georgia State, Marshall, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Seton Hall, UNCG, Winthrop and the host Seahawks round of the 2019 field.
  • Penn State enters the tournament as the second highest ranked team at No. 40 by golfstat.com only behind Campbell at No. 32 with the rest of the field being outside the top-50.
  • Campbell is also the defending champion of the tournament with Penn State having captured the crown the previous year, but didn't return last year to defend.
  • The Nittany Lions and the rest of the field will begin a 36-hole Monday with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. on the par-72, 6,026 yard course while the final round on Tuesday will begin at 9:00 a.m.

NEXT TIME OUT

  • Penn State will continue south and tee it up at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville on March 9-10 before returning to State College.
