T&F Preview: Jim Thorpe Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State track & field program wraps up regular season competition Friday, May 3 at the Jim Thorpe Open. The Nittany Lions are set to compete in the Big Ten Outdoor Championship next week at the University of Iowa

LOOKING BACK AT THE PREVIOUS WEEK
Day 1
James Abrahams continued to cut time off his time in the men's 3000m steeplechase with his performance on Thursday night. Abrahams consistent pace allowed him to shave nearly three seconds off his previous best mark in the event. Abrahams clocked a time of 8:54.48, placing him fourth in the steeplechase event. Abrahams rose to fifth in the Big Ten with his performance.

Day 2
Brooke-Lynn Williams and Kiara Lester got the Nittany Lions off to a great start in the two, two hundred-meter portions of the relay race. Alexis Holmes gave the Nittany Lions the lead as she ran the 400-meter section of the race. Running the anchor and the 800-meter section of the race, Danae Rivers never relinquished the lead. The 800-meter indoor national champion concluded the record-setting performance, crossing the tape in 3:45.25. The previous record in the event was 3:47.80 set in 2018. 

Following up a strong performance in the 4x100 yesterday during qualifying, the Nittany Lions 4x100 team turned in a top-five all-time performance in the history of Penn State.  Brooke-Lynn Williams, Amariah Thomas, Kiara Lester, and Alexis Holmes ran 44.59 to move into fourth place all-time at Penn State in the event.  This time also ranks first in the Big Ten for the Nittany Lions.

Day 3
In the first event of the day, Mark Porter got the Nittany Lions off on the right foot by winning the college men's javelin throw. Porter set a new personal-best with a throw of 220-2 (67.12m). Porter increased his career-best mark by 1.59m that he had set last season. Porter's distance is currently in the top-40 in the NCAA.

Morgan Shigo continued the Nittany Lions winning ways by capturing the men's hammer throw championship. Shigo launched his best throw a distance of 234-4 (71.45m) to capture his first Penn Relays watch.

Competing in his final Penn Relays, senior Devin Bradham finished second in the men's high jump championships. Bradham advanced to the final two competitors to attempt a height of 2.18m in the championship final. To achieve this, Bradham cleared 7.05 (2.15m) on his final attempt at the height. 

NCAA EAST PRELIMINARY MARKS
Heading into the weekend, the Nittany Lions have 31 performances that rank in the top-48 in the east region. Those who rank in the top-48 advance to the NCAA East Prelims.

BIG TEN RANKINGS
The Nittany Lions have 33 student-athletes that rank in the top-10 in the Big Ten in their respective events.

Danae Rivers sits atop the Big Ten in both the 800-meter and 1500-meter race. Alexis Holmes ranks in the top-10 in both the women's 200-meter and the women's 400-meter race.

Morgan Shigo tops the Big Ten in the men's hammer throw with his top distance of 236-5 (72.05m).
