Bonsall Earns Big Ten Weekly Honor

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State women's gymnastics junior Alissa Bonsall was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week on Tuesday.  Bonsall recorded solid scores in all three events she competed in at the Collegiate Challenge last Saturday.

Bonsall's top performance of the day came on bars, where she earned a team-best 9.875.  That score ranked fourth overall in the meet and contributed to the team's 48.850 on bars, its top score on any event.

The junior recorded a 9.725 on floor and a 9.675 on vault, PSU's second-best score on both events.

Bonsall's 9.875 on bars was the top bars score of any Big Ten gymnast competing last weekend.  The Connecticut native had the nation's 12th-highest bars score of the season's opening weekend.

Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week is Bonsall's first career conference weekly award.  She is Penn State's first Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week since Kassidy Stauder on January 6, 2014.

No. 17 Penn State opened the 2020 season with a 193.500 at the Collegiate Challenge while competing against three ranked teams.  Junior Lauren Bridgens finished third in the all-around, fifth on floor and ninth on bars.  Freshman Cassidy Rushlow placed fifth on beam.

The Nittany Lions return to Rec Hall this Saturday, January 11, for their home opener against West Virginia.  The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m. with a broadcast on BTN Plus.
