Student-Athlete Check In: Kelsey Love – Penn State Field Hockey

As the events of early March unfolded and changed all over the country, Penn State student-athletes found themselves facing uncertainty and transition in their academic and athletic realities.

The Penn State field hockey team, 2019 Big Ten Tournament finalists, were two months into the Spring semester when the COVID-19 pandemic erupted.  As the entire Penn State family works for ways to stay connected, we can check in with some members of head coach Char Morett-Curtiss' field hockey team to get some insight into how typical student-athletes reacted, adjusted and began the process of forging ahead in our current circumstance.

Today we check in with State College native Kesley Love, who wrapped up her true freshman season as a redshirt on the Nittany Lions.

Kelsey took the time to answer some questions from GoPSUsports and offers some good insight into the daily life of a Nittany Lion during this time:

GoPSU: What was your first reaction when you heard that spring break had turned in to online learning?
A: At first, I was excited when it was just going to be one week of online classes but when it kept getting extended more I was upset because I wanted to go back and see all my friends.

GoPSU: How have you been adapting to online learning?
A: In the beginning online classes were a little weird with having them on zoom. After a few weeks I got used to it, but I still found it more difficult learning new material through zoom in comparison to in person classes.

GoPSU: Do you have a new favorite food or pastime since you were last on campus?
A: Ever since we have gone into quarantine, I have been able to make myself better breakfasts. My favorite being avocado toast with a dippy egg and Trader Joe's everything but bagel seasoning.

GoPSU: What has your family been doing together during this extended period of social distancing? Any family activities, etc.?
A: My family has been going on a lot more family walks and playing more board games. My sister Taylor and I have been doing puzzles and working out together. Right now we are all at the beach in Long Beach Island enjoying the change of scenery.

GoPSU: What is the one thing you miss most right now about not being back at Penn State?

A: I miss being able to see and hangout with my teammates every day. I especially miss our dinners at Pollock where we would talk about our days and eat ice-cream.

GoPSU: How have you been keeping in contact with your teammates?

A: I have been texting and facetiming with my teammates. We also have weekly team zoom calls where we all get to see each other.

GoPSU: What other things have you done during this time away from Happy Valley?

A: I live in State College so it has been weird seeing campus so empty, but I have been doing a lot more outdoor activities.

GoPSU: What is the first thing unrelated to sports that you are going to do when you get back to campus?
A: I am going to go to the market in Pollock and spend my dining dollars on perfect bars.
