POSTGAME NOTES: Penn State vs. Maryland

TEAM 

  • Penn State dropped to 40-3-1 against Maryland all-time, snapping a five-game win streak. 

  • The Nittany Lions are now 23-2 at home against Maryland. 

  • Penn State is 5-2 against Maryland since the Terrapins joined the Big Ten in 2014. 

  • The Nittany Lions snapped a streak of 14-straight wins against teams within 250 miles of Beaver Stadium. 

  • WR Benjamin Wilson made his Nittany Lion debut. He is one of 10 Penn State players who have made their debut this season. 

  • WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith became the ninth Nittany Lion to make their first career start this season. 

  • Freshman receivers KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Parker Washington both started for the Nittany Lions, marking the first time two true freshman receivers started for Penn State since Saeed Blacknall and Chris Godwin at Michigan in 2014. 

  • The Nittany Lions travel to Nebraska next Saturday, November 14. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on FS1. 

OFFENSE 

Team

  • Penn State gained 30 first downs, tied for the fourth-most in the James Franklin era. 

  • The Nittany Lions' 27 pass completions are tied for the program's eighth-most under Franklin. 

  • Penn State's 93 plays on offense are the most since having 99 at Iowa in 2017.  

Sean Clifford 

  • QB Sean Clifford attempted a program-record 57 passes. The record was previously held by Christian Hackenberg (55; at Indiana, 2013).  

  • He now has 448 career passing attempts, moving him into 15th all-time among Nittany Lion quarterbacks.  

  • Clifford finished with 340 passing yards, marking his third career 300-yard game. He is tied with Daryll Clark (2006-09) for fifth place on Penn State's all-time list. 

  • His nine career games of 200-plus yards passing moves him into a tie for 10th with Todd Blackledge (1980-82) and Wally Richardson (1992, 94-96).  

  • The 340 yards ranks tied for 16th in program history, matching his own mark at Minnesota in 2019 and Christian Hackenberg's performance at Indiana in 2013.  

  • The redshirt junior now has 3,708 career passing yards, passing John Schaffer (1983-86), Michael Robinson (2002-05) and John Hufnagel (1970-72) to move into 13th all-time in Penn State history.  

  • Clifford has three passing touchdowns in all three games this season. He now has nine career games with three or more passing scores.  

  • With the three passing scores, Clifford moves into sole possession of 10th place in program history with 34 TDs, moving ahead of Anthony Morelli (2004-07).  

  • Clifford completed 27 passes, moving his career total to 263, putting him in a tie for 12th at Penn State with Kevin Thompson (1996-99). 

Jahan Dotson

  • WR Jahan Dotson is the first Penn State football player to have a touchdown catch in each of the first three games of a season since Allen Robinson accomplished the feat in 2013 (vs. Syracuse, Eastern Michigan, UCF).  

  • Dotson's five touchdowns in the first three games of the season tie the Penn State record set by Joe Jurevicius in 1997. 

  • Dotson hauled in a 20-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. It was his 10th career touchdown reception. 

  • Dotson posted his third career 100-yard receiving game with 123 yards. It is his second 100-yard game this season (Ohio State). 

  • He has caught at least one pass in 23-straight games, dating back to Indiana game (10/20/18). 

  • Dotson became the 35th Nittany Lion to surpass 1,000 career receiving yards. He now has 1,052 career receiving yards to rank 31st in program history. 

  • Dotson has 18 career receptions of 20 or more yards. 

  • Through three games, Dotson has 21 receptions for 361 yards and five touchdowns. He is averaging 120.3 per game and 17.2 yards per reception.  

Pat Freiermuth 

  • TE Pat Freiermuth has caught a pass in 28-straight games dating back to the Pitt game (9/8/18). 

  • Freiermuth became the 34th Nittany Lion and seventh Penn State tight end to accumulate 1,000 career receiving yards. He has 1,072 career receiving yards to rank 29th in program history. 

Caziah Holmes 

  • RB Caziah Holmes set career highs with 29 rushing yards on nine carries. 

Parker Washington 

  • WR Parker Washington had 23- and 1-yard touchdown receptions in the fourth quarter, his second and third career touchdown grabs. 

  • Washington is the first Penn State true freshman to have two touchdown receptions in a game since Pat Freiermuth did so against Rutgers in 2018. 

  • Washington set a career high with eight catches. His previous high was four against Ohio State last week. 

DEFENSE 

Team 

  • The Nittany Lions snapped a streak of eight consecutive games with a forced fumble. 

Jayson Oweh 

  • DE Jayson Oweh collected a career-best 10 tackles. His previous best was six tackles against Ohio State. 

  • Oweh is the first Penn State defensive lineman with 10 or more tackles in a game since Yetur Gross-Matos against Indiana in 2018 (10 tackles). 

  • Oweh tied a career high with 2.0 tackles for loss. It was his fourth career game with 2.0 tackles for loss. The last time came at Michigan State in 2019. 

Ellis Brooks 

  • LB Ellis Brooks tallied seven tackles to go along with 1.5 tackles for loss.  

  • The redshirt junior paces the Nittany Lions in tackles (23) and tackles for loss (3.5) this season7.  

Brandon Smith 

  • LB Brandon Smith tied a career high with five tackles. He also had five against Ohio State. 

  • Smith recorded a solo sack in the third quarter, tying his career high. He had a full sack against Ohio State. 

Shane Simmons 

  • DE Shane Simmons recorded a career-high 1.5 sacks. He now has 2.5 for his career.  

Judge Culpepper 

  • DT Judge Culpepper tied a career high with a half-sack in the third quarter. 

Antonio Shelton 

  • DT Antonio Shelton matched a career high with three tackles. He has recorded three tackles on three different occasions with the last coming against Memphis in the Cotton Bowl. 

PJ Mustipher 

  • DT PJ Mustipher recorded his first career pass breakup.  

SPECIAL TEAMS 
  
Jake Pinegar 

  • K Jake Pinegar registered his 200th career point on an extra point in the second quarter. 

  • Pinegar's 116th career extra point moved him into sole possession of sixth all-time at Penn State, breaking a tie with Robbie Gould (2002-04). 

Jordan Stout

  • K/P Jordan Stout landed all three kickoffs for touchbacks. He has booted 18-straight touchbacks.
