Baseball Opens Home Slate Against Maryland

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Nittany Lion baseball program (2-6, 2-6) returns home to host Maryland after opening their season with two series on the road to begin the 2021 campaign.

Penn State and Maryland have met 33 times in the all-time series with Maryland holding the narrow edge at 17-16. The Nittany Lions and Terrapins have split the all-time series at University Park, each winning nine games.

The Nittany Lions baseball team opens their first series at home against Maryland.

The Nittany Lions fell in all four games last weekend on the road to the Indiana Hoosiers.

Diamond Lions on the Bump

The Penn State pitching staff continues to rack up the strikeouts during the first two weekends of the 2021 season. The Nittany Lions pitchers have accumulated 70 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings this season. Five Penn State pitchers have 10 or more strikeouts so far this season.

Bailey Dees takes the mound for the first game of the series and has 12 Ks in his first two starts. Dees had seven strikeouts in his last start against Indiana.

Conor Larkin will start for the Nittany Lions on Sunday and leads Penn State with 15 strikeouts and has limited opponents to a .229 batting average.

Kyle Virbitsky will start on Monday following a solid outing in the series finale against Indiana. Virbitsky tossed 6 1/3 and allowed just two runs while striking out five.

Penn State Hitters

Josh Spiegel continues to lead the Nittany Lions in batting average, OPS, OBP and total bases. Gavin Homer is hitting an even .300 out of the leadoff spot and has tallied four extra-base hits.

Freshman Jay Harry leads the Nittany Lion hitters with four doubles in the teams first eight games.
