Penn State Concludes Tournament Play At Hoki Fall Invite and Wahoowa Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--The Penn State Women's Tennis team wrapped up tournament play at Virginia Tech's Hokie Fall Invite and Virginia's Wahoowa Invitational.  

 
Wahoowa Invitational 

Singles  

Penn State found success within the singles matches with wins from Sofiya Chekylstova, Gabrielle O'Gorman and Olivia Ryan. Cheklystova collected two wins for the day defeating both Hibah Shaikh of Virginia in a three-match play, 6-1, 4-6, 10-6. She claimed her second victory over Sarah Nayar of North Caolina stat in a two-match play, 6-4, 6-0. 

Gabrielle O'Gorman battled to victory over Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez of Kansas in a two-match, 6-4, 6-1.  

Olvia Ryan concluded her tournament singles play with an impressive win over Virginia's Nicole Kiefer, 6-2, 6-3.  

Alexandra Nielson came up just short in her matches for the day. In a tight three-set match against Sofia Munera of Virginia she ultimately was defeated 7-5, 4-6, 15-13. Her second match against Old Dominion's Sahar Birman Nielson fell 6-2, 6-4.  

Doubles  

In doubles competition, duo Sofiya Chekylstova and Gabrielle O'Gorman defeated Virginia's Sara Ziodato and Nicole Kiefer, 6-3.  

Duo Danielle Alamo and Deanna Lasorda fell to Old Dominion's duo, Sahar Biran and Alesya Yakubovich in a 6-3 match. 

Hokie Fall Invite 

Singles   

Penn State finished out the tournament strong in the singles matches. Freshman,  Yovonna Zuffova captured her first colligate bracket win. Zuffova defeated James Madison University's Natalia Nikolopoulou in two 6-1, 6-1 sets.  

Karly Friedland put up a tough fight against Maria Fernanada Carvajal of East Tennessee in singles matches finales. However, she ultimately fell in two 6-3 sets. 

Doubles  

In doubles play, Penn State duo Karly Friedland and Yovonna Zuffova fell to East Tennessee's Alejandra Morales and Layo Bakhodirova 8-3.  

"The girls did a really good job this weekend I was really impressed especially since it was the first week of competition," said coach Alex Anghelescu. "I thought we were competitive, and we picked up right where we left off with our new momentum, I am really excited to see what the rest of the fall looks like!" 

The Nittany Lions will continue their fall season with the Northern ITA Regionals from Oct. 1-4.
