ANNAPOLIS, Md.-- The Penn State women's tennis team closed out day one of tournament play at Northern ITA Regionals. The first day of play consisted of two rounds of doubles and two round of singles play.
Singles
Yvonne Zuffova came off a first-round bye. Zuffova defeated Themis Haliou of Townson, 6-2, 6-2.
Karly Friedland picked up a win against Riya Mathur of Mount Saint Mary's, 6-1, 6-1.
Oliva Ryan earned victory against Margot Pessy of Duqencse, 6-2, 7-6.
Alina Lebedeva defeated Emily Elliott of Saint Joseph, 7-6, 6-2.
Danielle Alamo retired Vera Markovic of Maryland in the first round of play. However, fell in a close match to Asmara Rose, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Deanna Lasorda put up a great fight against Katrina Marinkovikj of George Washington, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Round 32 of play will continue tomorrow, Oct. 2.
Doubles
Penn State kicked off the weekend on a high note. Gabrielle O'Gorman and Sofiya Chekhlystova started the weekend strong with a win over Amelia Lawson and Sarah Pospischill of Townson, 6-1.
Alina Lebedeva and Yvonne Zuffova picked up a 6-4 win against Emily Elliott and Stow Weiss of Saint Josephs.
Penn State picked up their final doubles win of the day by duo Alexandra Nielsen and Karley Friedland against Duquesne's Daniela Latoni and Ellen Shanahan with a match score of 6-1.
Duo Danielle Alamo and Deanna Lasorda were defeated 6-3 against Olivia Amado and Ireland Amato of Saint Joseph.
Sydney Weinberg and Gracey Hirsch were fell 6-0 to Chloe Bendetti and Morgan Coburn of Georgetown.
Round 16 of doubles play will begin tomorrow, Oct. 2.
