Bothun Named Co-National Goaltender of the Month

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State women's hockey sophomore goaltender Josie Bothun was chosen the Hockey Commissioner's Association (HCA) women's hockey co-national goaltender of the month for December as announced Wednesday afternoon.

Bothun becomes the second Nittany Lion ever to win a national player of the month award after Kiara Zanon was the December 2020 national rookie of the month.

Though the Nittany Lions played just two games in the month of December, Bothun was spectacular in both games of Penn State's road series at New Hampshire Dec. 9-10.

The Wyoming, Minn. native earned back-to-back shutouts in a pair of 3-0 victories with a total of 45 saves made over both contests.

Even more impressive for Bothun were the records that she set with both wins. She became Penn State's all-time career wins leader with her 25th victory on Dec. 9 in just her 38th career start. She now has 27 total victories as a Nittany Lion.

On Dec. 10, Bothun's shutout was the eighth of her career, also setting a new Penn State high. She has since added another shutout for nine as a Nittany Lion.

Bothun's has gathered five CHA goaltender of the week honors in the 2021-22 season and two league goaltender of the month awards (Oct. and Dec.).

Bothun and the Nittany Lions return to action Tuesday, Jan. 11, in a nonconference game against Cornell. It will be Penn State's first home game at Pegula Ice Arena since early November.
