UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State baseball infielder Derek Cease was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Wednesday, announced by the conference. Cease played a big role in Penn State's three wins last week.
In four games, Cease batted .714 (five-for-seven) and walked four times. He scored four runs and drove in two, while stealing a base.
On Tuesday against Bucknell, Cease recorded an RBI single in the second inning.
He worked a walk in a pinch-hit appearance on Wednesday at West Virginia.
Cease went two-for-three at the plate in Friday's 8-7 win over Omaha. Cease drove in a run with an RBI single in the fifth, to cut PSU's deficit to one, and scored two runs, including the game-tying run in the seventh.
The Plymouth, Pa. native collected two hits and two runs in a 4-3 win over Omaha on Saturday. Cease scored the go-ahead run the eighth.
He created constant pressure on the bases all weekend, moving up on three wild pitches and a stolen base as well as going first-to-third following an error on a pickoff attempt.
On the season, Cease has three games with multiple hits and three games with multiple runs.
The Nittany Lions, led by head coach Rob Cooper, are 20-21 overall and 7-8 in Big Ten play entering a key home series against Michigan State, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
