UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's hockey team has selected three captains for the 2022-23 season. Defenders Rene Gangarosa and Mallory Uihlein and forward Kiara Zanon will share co-captain duties for next season and will each wear a "C."
Entering her fifth year in Hockey Valley, Gangarosa has been one of Penn State's most impactful and consistent performers from the blue line. The Rochester, N.Y. native has 43 points in 126 career games with a +30 rating for her career.
Gangarosa was recognized by College Hockey America as an all-league performer in 2021-22 for the first time in her career. She was named an All-CHA second team honoree after a 12-point season in which she sported lockdown defensive ability while also showcasing her great puck-moving skills.
Gangarosa has been an alternate captain in both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons for the Nittany Lions. She ranks third among program defenders with 43 career points, tied with former captain Kelsey Crow.
Uihlein's first captainship with the program comes after a stellar 2021-22 campaign where she also cemented herself as one of the nation's premier defenders. Uihlein set a program record among defenders with a 19-point season on six goals and 13 assists, surpassing Gangarosa's 18-point effort in 2020-21.
A smooth skater with great two-way play, the rising senior from Edina, Minn. elevated to fifth on the all-time defender scoring charts for Penn State with 39 points (9G, 30A) in 90 career games. She was picked an All-CHA first team performer in 2021-22.
Zanon has quickly emerged as one of the top playmakers in the country since coming to Penn State in 2020-21 and adds a captainship to her lengthy list of accolades entering her junior season in 2022-23.
Zanon became Penn State's first All-American and was the HCA National Rookie of the Year in 2020-21 and showed no signs of slowing down a season ago. The Fairport, N.Y. native became the fastest Nittany Lion to 50 career points, needing just 39 games to reach the milestone.
The two-time All-CHA first team selection currently has 68 points (23G, 46A) through 54 career games and tops the PSU career scoring chart with 1.27 points per game. Her 27 assists a season ago marked a new Penn State single-season record and her 39 points finished just behind preceding captain Natalie Heising's 40 points for the most in a single season for a Nittany Lion.
