ROSEMONT, Ill. – Junior goaltender Liam Souliere (Brampton, Ontario) was named the Big Ten Hockey Second Star of the Week following his performances during a weekend sweep at Wisconsin as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.
The junior ended the month of October stopping 63-of-64 shots he faced to lead Penn State to a road sweep at Wisconsin to open Big Ten play including a 32-save shutout, the first of his career, during the series finale, a 4-0 victory last Saturday.
Souliere's .945 save percentage leads the Big Ten and is tied for fourth nationally while his 1.50 goals-against average also leads the Big Ten and ranks tied for fifth in the nation, but is the lowest goals-against average for net-minders with at least six starts.
This marks the first time in his career he has received a weekly award as Souliere becomes the third different Nittany Lion to earn weekly recognition so far this season joining Ryan Kirwan and Ben Schoen who were named Third and First Star of the Week, respectively, on October 11 and October 18.
Souliere had a perfect month of October winning each of the six games he started to help No. 13/10 Penn State to its best start in program history at 8-0-0. The Nittany Lions are back in action this weekend as they welcome the No. 1/1 Michigan Wolverines to Pegula Ice Arena for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday evening with puck drop slated for 8 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
