No. 10 Women's Hockey Embarks on CHA Championship Match

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 10th-ranked Penn State women's ice hockey team looks to go to its first NCAA Tournament as they host Mercyhurst for the CHA Championship title on Saturday, March 4 at 2 p.m.

HISTORY 

  • This will be the 47th meeting between the two teams. Mercyhurst currently leads the series 24-13-9 but this will be the third time the two teams have met in the CHA tournament. Penn State has taken the last two regular season matchups against the Lakers as they swept Mercyhurst on the road on January 22-23 5-2 and 3-2. 

CHA CHAMPIONSHIP AT PEGULA

  • This will be the first time in program history the Nittany Lions will host the CHA championship. 

CORREIA NEAR 100

  • Graduate student Courtney Correia is approaching 100 career points after of four-point week at RIT on February 17-18. She was named CHA Forward of the Week for her play at the Tigers.
  • The Whitby, Ont. native currently has 97 points off 43 goals and 54 assists.
  • This season, Correia has tallied 11 goals and 21 assists for 32 points.

REGULAR SEASON...CLINCHED

  • Following the Nittany Lions sweep of Syracuse, Penn State clinched its second ever CHA Regular Season title.
  • The Nittany Lions also clinched home ice for the CHA Tournament which will be hosted on February 24-March 4. 

GETTING POINTS IN THE POSTSEASON

  • Nine student-athletes currently on the women's ice hockey roster are among the top point-getters in the CHA Postseason history at Penn State.
  • Tessa Janecke and Izzy Heminger each sit tied for second in program history in points in the postseason with six.

UNBEATEN STREAK, CONT.

  • Penn State currently stands at a 17-game unbeaten streak.
  • It is the second longest streak in CHA and is just two wins away from being the second highest in the conference's history.
  • The last time the Nittany Lions dropped a game was on Nov. 25 when they lost to Minnesota.

TOP TEN TWICE FOR PATTY

  • Forward Kiara Zanon was named by USA Hockey as one of 10 finalists for the 2023 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award as announced on Thursday.
  • This is the second time in her career that's been named a finalist for the player of the year honor. The full list of 2023 finalists can be found via the Patty Kazmaier award website.
  • Zanon's third season as a Nittany Lion was an historic one in 2022-23. She broke Natalie Heising's record in single season goals which was 21 as she's currently recorded 25 this season. The Fairport, N.Y., native leads the nation with five shorthanded goals.
  • On Jan. 13 against RIT, the forward equaled and surpassed the 100-career point mark as she scored back-to-back shorthanded goals on the same penalty kill. She hit the mark faster than any Nittany Lion in program history. 
  • Zanon also broke her own single season program record in points from a season ago which was 41 as she's tallied 48 so far.
  • She is a three-time CHA Forward of the Week recipient and captured two CHA Forward of the Month honors. The Fairport, N.Y. native also was named the 2023 CHA Player of the Year and CHA Scoring Champion.
  • Off the ice, she has performed community service efforts including reading to kindergarten students at Young Scholars Charter School, was a buddy at Night to Shine (prom night experience for people with disabilities) of the Tim Tebow Foundation, volunteered at the Pink Zone opening ceremony for breast cancer awareness, and helped run and coach young girls' hockey clinics and camps in Rochester, N.Y.

ALL-CHA, ALMOST ALL-PENN STATE

  • Five Penn State women's ice hockey student-athletes were named to All-CHA teams for the 2022-23 season on Tuesday afternoon.
  • Junior Kiara Zanon, senior Izzy Heminger, and freshman Tessa Janecke were selected to the All-CHA first team. Junior Lyndie Lobdell was named to the All-CHA second team while Janecke and Kendall Butze were each placed on the CHA All-Rookie team for their performances throughout the 2022-23 season.
  • Penn State's five all-league honorees are tied for the second-most by the program in a single season, trailing only Penn State's seven honorees in 2020-21.

KAMPERSAL COACH OF THE YEAR AND MORE....

  • Head coach Jeff Kampersal was named CHA Coach of the Year while Kiara Zanon was tabbed CHA Player of the Year and CHA Scoring Champion. 
  • Tessa Janecke received the CHA Rookie of the Year honor while Izzy Heminger earned her first CHA Best Defenseman award.
  • This is the most CHA individual awards the program has compiled it its history.
