No. 11 Men's Lacrosse Downs No. 14/16 Ohio State 17-9

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. The 11th-ranked Penn State men's lacrosse team returned home to a rousing 17-9 defeat of No. 14/16 Ohio State on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 

  • Ohio State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 13:18 in the first quarter off a goal by Kyle Borda.
  • Penn State responded aggressively with three straight goals coming off the sticks of Jake Morin, Matt Traynor and Grant Haus to take a 3-1 lead with 2:13 remaining in the quarter.
  • Both teams scored one more time in the quarter with Jack Traynor closing the quarter with a goal with ten seconds left to put the Nittany Lions ahead 4-2.
  • The Buckeyes started the second quarter with a goal by Dillon Magee with 14:39 remaining to narrow the Penn State lead to 4-3.
  • Penn State then scored two straight goals off the sticks of Kevin Winkoff and Mac Costin to take a 6-3 lead with 13:08 remaining in the half.
  • Ohio State countered with two goals by Jack Myers and Mitchell Pehlke to cut the Penn State lead to 7-6 with 5:23 left in the half.
  • After a goal by Matt Traynor and Ohio State's Matt Caputo, Penn State would score eight unanswered goals up until 2:45 into the third quarter when Ohio State attempted to cut the bleeding with a goal by Myers to make the score 15-7 Penn State.
  • Luke Mercer scored the final Penn State goal of the quarter to send the game into the final frame with the Nittany Lions ahead 16-8.
  • Both sides each scored once in the final quarter to have Penn State secure the 17-9 victory.

 
GOALTENDING

  • Jack Fracyon allowed nine goals on 21 shots and increased his record to 6-3 on the year. 

 
STATS AND NOTES

  • Three Nittany Lions tallied hat-tricks which were by Jack Traynor, Matt Traynor and Mac Costin.
  • Penn State took the first win of the Creator's Cup 2023 run.
  • The Nittany Lions had 10 goal scorers in the game.
  • Penn State improves to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play.
