Lady Lions Clash with No. 14/13 Hoosiers in B1G Road Test

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women's basketball is set to take on no. 14/_ Indiana on Wednesday, Jan. 10. Tip off in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is set for 7 p.m. as the Lady Lions and Hoosier meet for the 53rd time in both program's histories.
 
Penn State looks for its second Big Ten win of the season and 1,000th program win in Wednesday night's contest.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State soared past Northwestern in its first game of the New Year, by a 95-45 clip. This margin of victory marks the Lady Lions' largest conference win since defeating Wisconsin by 44 points on Jan. 17, 2013. 
  • Head coach Carolyn Kieger earned her 150th career win with the victory including 51 at Penn State.
  • The Lady Lions were efficient on both sides of the ball scoring 95 points, their fifth highest point total of the season and seventh game scoring 90 points or more. The team shot 48.7% from the field.
  • Four players scored in double figures: Brigham led all scores with 17 points, Valladay with 16, Ciezki with 15 and Kapinus with 14.
  • Brigham shot 7-of-9 from the field including her first three point basket of the season. She also picked up a season high five assists. 
  • Penn State totaled a season team high 17 steals, six coming from Kapinus which is a season high for the redshirt junior. 
  • The team also met their season high assists with 26. Ciezki accounted for six which is a season best, and Brigham and Murray both had five. 
  • The Lady Lions caused a season high 30 turnovers and converted 44 points off their defense. 
  • Every player in blue and white that touched the court, scored at least two points. 

LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS 

  • Shay Ciezki ranks eighth in the Big Ten, averaging 16.2 points per game. Her total of 227 points through 14 games sits at a rank of nine. Ciezki is fourth in the Big Ten and 18th nationally in made three-pointers with 42. Her 41.6 clip beyond the arc sits her fifth in the conference.
  • Leilani Kapinus is fifth in the conference in blocks per game with a 1.07 mark.
  • The Lady Lions are second in the country in three-point percentage, shooting 41.5%. They also rank 10th nationally and third in the conference in three-pointers per game with 9.4. The team also has the seventh highest scoring offense in the country, averaging 88.6 points per game.
  • Penn State ranks fifth in the nation and second in the conference in field goal percentage (51.2).
  • The Lady Lions rank third in the B1G in scoring average, scoring at a 88.2 clip per game. This percentage puts them for 10th nationally. 
  • The Lady Lions also rank second in the league in steals per game (10.9), second in blocked shots per game (4.8) and second in bench points per game (27.5).
  • The Lady Lions defense forces 21 turnovers per game which is second in the B1G and 28h in the nation.

2023-24 ACCOLADES

  • Shay Ciezki collected her first conference accolade of the season after totaling 62 points through three games including a personal best 27-point performance against Oklahoma State in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship. The Buffalo native made the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 27.
  • Marisa earned a spot on the three-person Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (11/20) after her to double digit scoring outings against Kansas (34 points) and St. John's (15 points).
  • Marisa was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the second consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten preseason team.
  • Owusu repeats on the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award Watch List.

SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS

  • The Hoosiers have been on a 12-game winning tear after dropping their second game of the season to Stanford by a 96-64 margin. Indiana has won its most recent 12 games including a top-25 win over Tennessee. 
  • Indiana is 13-1 this season and 4-0 in conference play with wins over Rutgers, Illinois, Michigan and Nebraska. 
  • Three starters are averaging double digit points for the Hoosiers: Mackenzie Clark (19.6), Sara Scalia (15.6) and Yarden Garzon (11.6). 
  • Scalia won Big Ten Player of the Week on Nov. 20 after averaging 23 points, 4 assists and held a +8.0 assist-to-turnover ratio. 
  • Holmes leads the league in field goal percentage (66.9) and ranks fifth in the country. She also ranks third in the B1G in points (275) and points per game (19.6). Holmes also sits at a rank of two in 3pt% and third in three pointers made in the conference which is good for 15th and 12th in the nation respectivley. 
  • Indiana leads the league in bopth field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense. The Hoosiers also sit a top of any women's basketball program in the country in shooting percentage from the field. 
  • IU also sits second in the league in defensive rebounds per game (28.9) and win percentage (92.9). 
  • The Hoosier's three point percentage mark of 39.5 sits them second in the B1G and fifth in the country.

  • The Lady Lions lead the all-time series with the Hoosiers by a 33-19 margin.
