Retrum Named to HCA Rookie of the Year Watch List

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women's ice hockey freshman forward Stella Retrum was named to 2024 Hockey Commissioners Association National Women's Rookie of the Year watch list as announced by the association on Thursday.

The conference offices come up with this initial "Watch List" of rookies from across division one programs. A committee of voters — made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, and media — will ultimately choose the winner who will be announced in March during the NCAA Frozen Four.

Retrum is one of 23 women's ice hockey rookies nationally who were named to the list and one of two from College Hockey America. She is the first Nittany Lion this season to be named to an HCA watch list.

Retrum is also a two-time CHA Rookie of the Month selection. The Maple Grove, Minn., native received the honor in November and January. Her 21 points this season ranks seventh nationally among rookies while her 11 goals are tied for the fifth-most in the CHA and tied for fourth among NCAA newcomers. She also was named HCA Rookie of the Month for her play in November.

She recorded her first career hat trick and a career-high five points in an 8-2 win at Dartmouth on Nov. 25 to earn one of her three CHA Player of the Week nods this season. Retrum is one of five CHA players to record a hat trick this season and the only freshman to do so.

Retrum and the rest of the Nittany Lions return to action on Friday, Feb. 2 when they host Mercyhurst. Puck-drop is set for 6 p.m.
