Women’s DMR Sets School Record on Final Day of Indoor Regular Season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State track & field set three top-five program marks on Friday at the Penn State Tune-Up and Terrier DMR Challenge in its final meet day of the 2024 indoor regular season.

Penn State's women's DMR team crushed the school record at the Terrier DMR Challenge with a 10:49.05, a mark that will go down as a top-ten collegiate mark of all time. Hayley Kitching, Zoey Goldstein, Maddie Ullom, and Kileigh Kane combined for the historic run.

At the Penn State Tune-Up, Victoria Vanriele became just the second woman in school history to run sub-1:29 in the women's 600-meters as she set the No. 2 mark ever by a Nittany Lion with a 1:28.80. Carter Fitzgerald's 1:47.25 in the men's 800 became the fifth-best indoor 800-meter mark in school history as the Nittany Lions collected three top-five marks in school history on Friday.

TERRIER DMR CHALLENGE SUMMARY

Evan Dorenkamp clocked a 4:03.44 in the mile in Penn State's first of two events at the Terrier DMR Challenge.

Penn State's women's DMR team took the track on Friday evening and threw down a 10:49.05 school record in a race that saw three separate teams go under the previous NCAA record in the event.

TUNE-UP TRACK EVENT SUMMARY 

Lauren Princz took home the win in the women's 60-meters, clocking a 7.79 in the prelims and a 7.75 in the finals.

In the men's mile, Jacob Smith also placed second overall, going 4:09.97. In the women's mile, Samantha Hayes went 4:57.54 for third place while Allison Dougherty (4:57.77) and Katie Dallas (4:58.54) rounded out the Nittany Lions under 5:00.

In the 400m, Austin Gallant went 47.06 to earn the win while Matt DeMatteo set a PR, going 48.21. Kylie Jacoutot ran a 56.44 PR to win the women's 400m.

Kevin Haas earned the win in the men's 600-meters, going 1:20.92. Christopher DeSousa followed with a 1:22.72 for second place. For the women, Vanriele clocked her 1:28.80 PR to set the second-fastest mark in school history. Allison Johnson competed in her second race of the season and went 1:32.56 to claim second.

1:47.25 was the time Fitzgerald recorded in a very quick heat of the men's 800-meters. Fitzgerald's personal-best mark leapfrogged teammate Olivier Desmeules for the No. 5 time in school history. Freshman Kaleb Nastari also recorded a personal-best with a 1:48.30 while Desmeules came in at 1:48.31. For the women, Lea Hatcher (2:09.46) and Makenna Krebs (2:09.56) each broke 2:10 for the first time in their respective careers.

Pat Abel ran a 21.26 in the men's 200 to claim second place while Ryleigh Hearn set a PR with a 25.24 to win the women's 200m.

Florence Caron's 9:18.18 PR in the women's 3K wrapped up the track events for the Nittany Lions at the Penn State Tune-Up.

TUNE-UP FIELD EVENT SUMMARY 

Hailey Zurich went 13-5.25 (4.10m) to win the women's pole vault in the first field event of the afternoon. Victoria Atkinson (12-7.5, 3.85m) and Meredith Baham (12-1.5, 3.70m) finished second and third overall. For the men, Tristan McGarrah set a personal-best mark with a 16-2.75 (4.95m) clearance to win the event. Jonathan Petersen (15-11, 4.85m) finished second.

With a 65-1.25 (19.84m) best toss, Collin Burkhart won the men's weight throw competition. Alex Pancoast was the top overall collegian on the women's side, setting a PR with a 58-10.75 (17.95m) mark.

Penn State finished 1-2-3 in the women's long jump with Tesia Thomas earning the win with a 20-3.5 (6.18m) best jump. Maddie Pitts (18-3.75, 5.58m) and Chloe Royce (18-3, 5.56m) finished second and third.

Timothy Watson won the high jump with a 6-9.75 (2.08m) clearance while teammate Isaac Osifo placed third with a 6-8.75 (2.05m) mark. Gwen Cudmore finished fourth on the women's side with a 5-5 (1.65m) clearance.

In the men's shot put, Lucciano Pizarro placed first with a 59-10.25 (18.24m) throw. Duane Knisely (58-7.5, 17.87m), Dylan Lambrecht (55-6.5, 16.93m), and Jakub Korejba (51-3.75, 15.64m) came in second, third, and fourth, respectively. On the women's side, Penn State also finished first through fourth. Mallory Kauffman won with a 52-10.75 (16.12m) mark while Pancoast (43-6, 13.26m), Pitts (37-8.75, 11.50m), and Royce (36-9, 11.20m) rounded out the top four.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Geneva, Ohio for the 2024 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24.
