Karnes Named to U.S. Senior National Team

LOUISVILLE, K.Y.  – Penn State men's gymnast Josh Karnes was named to the U.S. Men's Senior National Team after his performance at the Winter Cup in Louisville over the weekend. 
 
Karnes finished ninth overall in the all-around with a score of 160.500. 
 
DAY ONE – Feb. 23
On day one of Winter Cup competition, Matt Cormier and Michael Artlip sat at 12th and 13th place in the all-around. Cormier had a score of 79.500 and Artlip had a score of 78.450. 
 
Karnes ended day one with an all-around score of 77.650 in 15th place. The Erie, Pa. native took second place on floor with a score of 14.450. 
 
"Fast start - had some trouble along the way, but the guys fought hard," said head coach Randy Jepson. "They've qualified into the second day on Sunday, and they'll be ready to bring it."
 
DAY TWO – Feb. 25
In the finals, Karnes scored a 14.200 on floor to help him take home the silver medal in the event. On vault the junior scored a 14.050 with a stick bonus on the second day, improving his score by almost three points.
 
Cormier ended the day in 11th place in the all-around, collecting a score of 159.050. 
 
Artlip took 13th in the all-around with a score of 157.000. On day two, the senior notched a score of 13.800 on vault. His overall vault score of 26.850 earned him the silver medal in the event. 
 
"They had a great day," said Jepson. "Every guy went six for six, so we were 18 out of 18. They looked fantastic. I am really proud of their fight today. The guys have some great momentum going into the end of the season here."
