UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Gretchen Gilmore registered a hat trick and three assists to earn 100 career points and lead No. 19 Penn State women's lacrosse to upset Big Ten opponent No. 11 Johns Hopkins, 16-13, in the team's last regular season game at Panzer on Thursday.
Penn State improves to 9-6 (4-2 Big Ten) while Johns Hopkins moves to 10-6 (2-4 Big Ten).
With today's victory, the Nittany Lions have clinched the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – Penn State 3, Johns Hopkins 5
Alayna Costa opened up scoring three minutes into the game for the Blue Jays, followed up by a second goal for Johns Hopkins by Ava Angello to extend the lead.
Meghan Murray scored Penn State's first goal of the game, an unassisted goal, with 6:02 to go in the quarter, however, Abbey Hurlbrink responded with a goal less than a minute later.
Johns Hopkins's Maeve Barker scored an unassisted goal with 4:02 left to go, but Lauren Saltz scored for the Nittany Lions off a Kara Nealon assist to close the gap.
With 1:39 left in the first quarter, Ashley Mackin became the Blue Jay's fourth goal scorer of the game.
Gretchen Gilmore scored with :41 to earn 100 points in her career at Penn State.
Second Quarter – Penn State 8, Johns Hopkins 7
Charlotte Smith scored a free position shot goal two minutes into the quarter for the Blue Jays, in addition to another goal by Mackin.
Kayla Abernathy scored Penn State's first goal of the quarter with an assist from Kelly MacKinney, followed up by Gretchen Gilmore's second goal of the game with 7:59 to go.
Kristin O'Neill scored an unassisted goal, Penn State's third goal in a row, to come within one of Johns Hopkins.
With 4:05 to go in the quarter Murray scored a free position goal to tie the game.
Saltz scored an unassisted goal with two minutes left in the quarter to give the Nittany Lion's their first lead of the game.
Third Quarter – Penn State 14, Johns Hopkins 9
Abernathy scored her second goal of the game less than a minute into the quarter of an assist from MacKinney, followed up by another goal from Abernathy with 12:39 to go.
MacKinney scored a behind the back goal to extend the lead for the Nittany Lions.
Barker scored her second of the game and first for Johns Hopkins in the quarter with 7:33 left, which was followed up by a Taylor Hoss scoring two minutes later.
Hoss scored off a free position goal at 3:39 to net her second of the game and Saltz registered a hat trick, scoring her third of the game, less than a minute later.
Hoss notched her third of the game, with a behind the back goal, to register a hat trick with 2:19 left in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter – Penn State 16, Johns Hopkins 13
Bailey Cheetham started off the fourth quarter with a free position goal for the Blue Jays at 12:26, but MacKinney responded less than a minute later with her second goal of the game.
Gilmore scored her third goal of the game with 10:40 left in the game, Penn State's second goal in 49 seconds.
With 10:04 to go in the quarter, Angello scored her second goal of the game, while Mackin followed up with a goal six minutes later for Johns Hopkins.
Campbell Case scored for the Blue Jays with 1:47 remaining in the quarter.

>> The Nittany Lions had seven different goal scorers, with Gretchen Gilmore, Kayla Abernathy and Lauren Saltz leading the way each with a hat trick. Kelly MacKinney, Brooke Hoss and Meghan Murray scored two goals, while Kristin O'Neill notched one to contribute to the scoring efforts.
